    Sprites are a form of lightning (yes I'm talking about a form of lightning, not the drink!) that occur in the mesosphere above thunderstorms in the troposphere. They are often triggered by discharges between the thundercloud below and the Earth.

     

    Despite all of this, they are rarely documented. There have only been a few instances of them being observed, like the image below that was taken from an aircraft in July 1994.
