November 1923 was a cold month overall with a CET of 3.3C but the last third of the month was very cold, 20th-30th November 1923 with a CET of 0.5C

Just before the very cold spell, there was a very wet period on the 12th and 13th

    Oughtershaw: 90mm on 12th

    Llyn Fawr: 100mm on 13th

    Penrhyn Quarry: 73mm on 13th

There was floods on the Mersey at Sale, 300 houses were flooded at Clitheroe and streets at Portmadoc was under two feet water.

Cold air flooded down from the NE

This brought severe frosts and snowfalls in numerous places. The 28th was a particular snowy day in the south.

-11.1C was recorded at West Linton on the night of 29th-30th

A cluster of really cold Novembers from 1910-25 inclusive

    1910, 1915, 1919, 1923 and 1925, all in the top 20 coldest Novembers.

Also 8 Novembers cooler than the following December in that period.

    Real stats quirk

Might have helped with the phrase November bear a duck December all slush and muck. This period apart from winter 16/17 delivered average/fairly mid winters in the main..

    Real stats quirk

I do not think that any of those really cold Novembers went on to see a decent winter that was anything to write home about, and 1925-26 was indeed a pear shaped winter that brought early cold spells that deteriorated into nothing, and 1915-16 saw the warmest January on record although flipped much colder later in Feb and into March 1916.  Nov 1919 saw the cold in the earlier part of Nov, but then winter 1919-20 saw very few cold spells and was largely mild.

So seeing notable cold spells in November is not a good sign for seeing a good winter from a cold perspective.

The only cold November that went on to see a decent winter that I can think of was Nov 1985, and even then that wasn't quite as extremely cold as the Novembers that you mention, yes winter 1985-86 may have seen a very mild spell for the first three weeks of Dec, but the rest of the winter was good for cold spells.
