A word of warning. As expected the front makes very little progression E on the latest Euro 4 and only brings snow to Wales/W Midlands.

After a cold spell Friday sees temperature rising possibly hitting double figures in parts of the south then around 5c to 8c quite widely on Saturday though a chilly wind again

Then into next week it looks like reverting back to what we had a few weeks back one day mild another day cold and so on wettest and windiest in the north west but on the whole it should be a bit milder with temperature nearer average

This feels like a traditional British cold spell that you would expect at some stage in an average winter, nothing special especially given we are slap bang in the depths of mid winter, but very seasonal all the same, its rare you can describe the UK weather as being just right for the time of year, but this is one of those occasions , it just feels right to be having this sort of weather right now..

BBC weather this morning warning of potential disruption due to snow over the midlands, so to keep an eye on the forecast. No official warnings out but an upgrade in terms of moving from rain/sleet to snow. I think it will go down to the wire before we know how this will play out!

Going on that statement, North Wilts and Cotswolds will not be in the warning, although looking at the charts a bit of sleet/snow not out the question temporarily.

Thanks Ian your contribution is appreciated. You did well to post that before the wrist slashing started. The warnings are generally taken down prior to being re-issued i have found.

Must be a mare for you at present.I know Lisa Gallagher came on air this morning and issued a forecast prior to EURO04 updating and will now possibly have to re- forecast.

I can't pre-judge what the Chief Forecaster runs with. Keep checking UKMO website.

Some wintery weather looks possible on Sat just about anywhere, especially on the back of the system coming in from the NW.  -6c uppers quite widely.

I wouldn't say that. The bbc graphics looks good for areas south of the mids. Anywhere with some elevation East of Gloucester should do well i think .

Is it not likely to be dry on Saturday in the ridge with the system arriving overnight bringing  rain and positive 850mb temps?

Indeed. The ECM shows the area of rain moving eastwards during Friday evening, possibly preceded by hill snow in the north but nothing particularly wintry elsewhere. It will clear later in the night allowing it to turn very icy in places.

Saturday looks cold, sunny and frosty! :)

-6C uppers covering the whole UK at 0700 on Sat (lastest GFS)  I'm only going off that. The system looks like mainly rain that clears through on Fri night but the cold air following may turn the back edge wintery.  Then it clears up on Sat.

The rain will have long cleared by that point. Possibly a few wintry showers in the northwest but that's about it.

Correct, hardly positive unless Knocker means they are cold in a positive way ;)

Is the snow that is currently forecast for tonight from the front that currently shows on the radar across Wales/West Country? Struggle to see how there would be much left of it looking at the current strength!

Well I hope the front is expected to pep up crossing the Irish sea because its a very pethetic affair right now! Cant see it giving lots of snow unfortunately. Warnings dont seem necesary?

Or am i missing something??

Regarding the strength of the precip...

The models are handling this really badly. The differences between the Euro4 from run to run is a nightmare but it generally shows it fairly light and patchy, the ECM has it going much further east and far more potent. I would expect it to pep up somewhat during the evening, but it's never going to become widespread properly heavy snow.

Warnings just issued

Issued at: 1051 on Tue 20 Jan 2015

Valid from: 1600 on Tue 20 Jan 2015

Valid to: 1200 on Wed 21 Jan 2015

An area of snow is expected to extend northeastwards from parts of Wales across the Midlands and into parts of northern England on Tuesday evening and night, persisting into Wednesday morning. Accumulations of 3-8 cm are likely in places, perhaps 10-15 cm very locally on high ground. The snow should ease gradually through Wednesday morning. The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to transport.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A complex frontal system is running into the UK from the west and is coming up against a stagnant cold airmass on its forward flank over central and eastern areas. Rain arriving in westernmost areas will readily turn to snow as it comes inland later on Tuesday, spreading into Wales along with central and northern England overnight. The snow is likely to accumulate easily, given the cold ground surfaces. Details remain uncertain regarding the extent and amount of snowfall, in particular the northward extent of snowfall into northern England (indeed some areas may miss the snow altogether). Therefore it is likely that this warning will be updated in the light of new information and may be upgraded to Amber should confidence increase sufficiently.
