That has been known for some time I think Knocker. It seems to be linked to the mercury mining ongoing in the Amazon basin - a lot of water is needed to extract the mercury. The contaminated water then gets washed back into the Amazon which drains into the Atlantic where it contaminates the tuna.

The mercury is mostly being used for the manufacture of low energy lightbulbs. Now there's a good idea to save the planet, or maybe not?

Yes you are quite right Picog although I'm not sure about the mercury mining. Certainly the price of gold has started a rush on gold mining in South America, most of it illegal, and mercury is used for separating gold which then leaches into watersheds.
