MP-R Ah ok. Looked at the synoptic charts that week, and they do indeed show an easterly with cold uppers being replaced by a SE-ly with warmer uppers around the Friday.

LetItSnow Remember this one (trough of Jan 25), I was out on a fairly high hill (in the south) and certainly felt it. The rain was just like a brief heavy shower but the wind was quite something else. Stronger than Darragh for about 3 mins, but it was all over very quickly. Indeed you could see the clearance behind the trough even before it arrived.

It did cause huge amounts of disruption on the railway though, with most lines blocked.

To show how extremely disturbed the weather was in this period, as soon as that trough had cleared another frontal system was already moving in, arriving early on the Sunday morning little more than 12 hours later (and the sky did go clear behind the trough). That second system was itself gone by the Sun afternoon, which was dry (but flooding becoming a big problem).

At the time I would say winter 2013/14 would’ve been among the worst spells of weather I’ve experienced, however since then I would say the winters of 2015/16 and 2019/20 have probably been worse. 2013/14 definitely the worse for boringness however I don’t remember any flooding where I was, just constant steady rainfall. Winter 2015/16 had multiple floods here in December and in January and February 2020 was a month I’ll never forget, I genuinely don’t think there was a dry day that month at all. Constantly raining and a lot of flooding here.

An awful winter from a wind and rain perspective, one of the worst I can remember. Barely any settled spell, lack of any snow and very minimal frost. I would never want a repeat of it. Worse than the likes of 97-98, 99-00, 15-16, 19-20 winters that were also washouts and devoid of much cold or snow.

Since falling snow is so rare here I actually very much enjoyed this winter. Found it very exciting In what is normally a boring season. Of course all the flooding brought lots of disruption, but doesn't all types of weather in its extreme?
