Just heard from my friends in Holland that in the north of the country they are ice skating on the roads as everything has suddenly frozen over, the cold is creeping closer, will it ever get here?

Well... not what you see on a regular day! Ice skating on the roads is indeed very well possible!

See for even more ice fun the link here. These are images that will be remembered for a long, long time.

And for some more information about the meteorological background see https://forum.netweather.tv/topic/84756-model-output-discussions-pm-311215/?page=38.

Here is the latest map and the snow and ice has really made lots of progress since I last looked at it two days ago.

2016 to 2017 another disappointment?

July had the 6th lowest snow cover on record. https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/snow-and-ice/extent/snow-cover/namgnld/7

Current ice extent is about 3rd lowest on record, with 3-4 weeks until the minimum is reached.
I posted the latest sea ice update just about half an hour ago. Here's the link

Not sure if the posting here is is correct..

What are the chances of global warming being over corrected by volcanic eruptions?

Well, Pinatubo in 1991 was the 2nd largest eruption of the 20th century with a VEI of 6. That caused a temporary dip in the temperature rise globally, which you can see with the yellow circle in the graph below.

So for a stronger and longer lasting impact on global temperatures, we'd need a much larger and more destructive eruption, around a VEI 7. Something like the "year without a summer" Tambora eruption. And we're not due another of those for a couple of hundred years yet.

A cluster of slightly smaller, long lasting eruptions could do the job too, provided they are positioned in the right locations. But I don't know how likely that is.

We're going a bit off topic here but I expect someone will open a new thread by October.

Anyway, this from a post I made on TWO...

The black verical arrows reflect the two largest known eruptions of the last 3000 years. Did they cause the following temperature dip or was it a combination of factors.

Paper here with graph legend.
