    September - Hobart, Tasmania

A mild and dry start to spring. The mean temperature was +0.7C above average ( 1981-2010 ) , rainfall less than half of the long term average ( 1882-2014 ).

    Average maximum:  16.2 ( +0.8 )

    Average minimum:  7.4 ( +0.5 )

    Rainfall:  25mm ( average 53mm )

    Rain days ( +1mm ):  8/from 12

Extensive high pressure across southern Australia with only a shower or two on weakening fronts, with quick clearance. After a cold and snowy August, only one day this month saw fresh snow about the mountain range, with a dusting to 600m level on the 22nd. Snow patches from winter remain above about 1100m. What was turning out to be a near historically dry month was broken when a cut off low developed to the west before crossing the island, to be over the Tasman Sea on the 28-29th. 14mm fell over these two days, more than half othe month's total rain count. A significant warm day occured on the 14th with a high of 26.9C - the second highest temperature recorded for the first half of September. In the valleys to the north of Hobart it was almost 1C warmer, a new Tasmanian record for this time period.

Extremes in daily temperature for September

    Highest maximum:  26.9....14th ( Record 31.0 in 1987 )

    Lowest maximum:  10.6....22nd ( Record 6.1 in 1885 )

    Highest minimum:  15.0....15th ( Record 18.0 in 1973 )

    Lowest minimum:  2.3....4th ( Record -0.8 in 1897 )

My statistics for central Reading in September 2015:

    Average maximum: 18.1
    Average minimum: 9.1
    Average for month: 13.6

    Highest maximum: 21.6 (September 10)
    Lowest maximum: 13.9 (22)
    Highest minimum: 15.4 (12)
    Lowest minimum: 4.1 (26)

    Air frosts: none recorded.
Fog recorded at 9am on 1 day (September 20)
    No thunder heard.

Rainfall: Reading University shows 45mm for the month, which is about 90% of average.
Sunshine: Reading University shows 161 and 169 hours for the month on their two recorders, about 120% of average.
The main feature of September 2015 was the absence of warm weather, with both maxima and minima around 1.5 deg C below the long-term mean.  The month was notable for its consistently cool temperatures and some cold nights - the highest temperature recorded all month was 21.6C on the 10th, which is exceptionally low.  September 2015 was slightly drier than average and quite sunny (in fact sunnier than the poor August we've just had), with a settled spell from the 4th to the 13th and a dry and sunny last week with none of the early fog reported in other parts of the UK.

    For YATTON, North Somerset

The month began with a showery northerly. Showers were heavy on the 01st with hail and thunder in the afternoon, these continued into the 02nd as rain. The 03rd to the 05th was drier but remained cool with minimal sunshine.

A more settled period ensued. At first it was very sunny with maximum hours of sun on the 06th and 07th with chilly night (07.3C on the 06th), but cloudy quickly became an issue by the 08th. The 09th continued with sunny 'intervals' rather than lengthy periods. The 10th was sunnier and, with a more southeasterly feed, achieved 23.6C, the highest temperature of the month. The 11th continued warm with increasing cloud from the southwest.

Unsettled conditions returned with overnight rain clearing to showers on the 12th followed by a brighter afternoon with a strong breeze. The 13th was calmer but cloudy with intermittent spells of light rain. A deep low arrived on the 14th with its attendant weather conditions. Very heavy downpours continued throughout the day; torrential rain led to flooding locally in the afternoon along with strong winds. 31.4mm was recorded on this day. Early showers moved through on the 15th before clearing later with sunny intervals. This location was on the edge of an active weather system affecting the southeast on the 16th; the day was dull and breezy with period of light rain later. This moved away with a showery westerly on the 17th and 18th. It became sunnier throughout the 18th.

A brief ridge of high pressure brought a settled weekend. The 19th dawned foggy but legnthy sunny spells lifted the temperature to 22.6C in the afternoon. A southerly breeze picked up on the 20th with increasing cloud throughout the day.

Rain returned on the 21st, albeit light at first. Heavier rain moved through early on the 22nd, a squall line bringing temporarily strong winds to the region. The afternoon was brighter. It was a cool start on the 23rd with 05.9C but the day was predominantly dry and bright with a brisk westerly wind. Showers became very heavy on the 24th as winds were straight off the Severn Estuary. It was windy in the afternoon.

The final leg of the month brought a much quieter spell of weather with warm days of sunshine and cool nights. It was misty early on the 25th. An easterly breeze picked up throughout the day on the 29th and was most prevalent on the 30th.

A very typical September with the month split 50/50 between settled and unsettled. The month was notable by its cool nights which contributed to the overall CET value across the country. The month was also more enjoyable due its variety. Oddly, it came out sunnier than August.
