Incredible scenes at Wimbledon, with the sudden drop in temperature from 80 to 60F reminding me of the monsoon season in my childhood days in Singapore. I suspect the camera operator on top of the gantry would have been brought down to ground level a lot quicker now than then, and with an open umbrella with metal tip covering the poor chap, unbelievably dangerous in my view in a thunderstorm. Summer 1985 was strange, being 'poor' (Eden) at least in the SE, yet having an almost tropical thunderstorm like this, and I recall being caught in a similar storm at Crawley a few weeks earlier when the roof of the local leisure centre collapsed under the weight of water, fortunately without casualties.

I remember being on a school "field day" walk in the Surrey countryside this day. I recall it being warm or very warm, humid, sunny at first but becoming much cloudier in the afternoon with a slight thundery shower. Looks like we might have been on the edge of the system which produced the Wimbledon storm.

A Face like Thunder I remember the first half of July 1985 was a brief return to the "proper summer" conditions we enjoyed in 1983 and 1984, sadly it was not to last with Live Aid on the 13th famously being the final good day of the spell, though there was also a shorter warm spell in the fourth week.

Summer8906 a very poor Summer by modern standards, but more common back then. Heathrow didn't exceed 30c once, although it came close on one day at 29.8c. Only 9 days all meteorological Summer exceeded 25c. The entire Summer average max at Heathrow was 20.57c, which is 2.4c below the average for 1991-2020, reflective of how poor Summers could be back then.

Live Aid day was one of the very few hot days at 28.9c, and considering how poor most of the rest of that Summer was, they were very lucky.

They should have carried on playing although seeing the ball may have been a problem for players and linesmen 😂
