Southwesterly severe gales will affect much of northern England, north Wales, Northern Ireland, southern and central Scotland at times during Saturday and overnight into Sunday. This warning has been updated to separate from Friday's warning, and to increase the expected impacts to medium. The worst conditions seem likely to be during Saturday afternoon and evening across parts of northern England, southeast Scotland and perhaps northeast Wales and the northwest Midlands. Here gusts to around 70 mph are possible even at lower levels, with hills seeing even higher gusts. Elsewhere in the warning area, gusts are likely to be around 60 mph, with some less windy interludes, especially through central parts of Scotland. Please be aware of the likelihood of travel disruption on roads and ferry routes. Winds may be strong enough to bring down trees and perhaps cause damage to buildings and other structures. A period of heavy rain will also affect much of the area, for which see separate warnings.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

southwest airstream is expected to be in place across much of the UK, but will be particularly strong along, and to the south of, the trailing frontal zone. A wave running along this zone seems likely to supply a further "squeeze" in the Saturday afternoon/ evening period, and it is the extent of this "squeeze" which remains somewhat uncertain - enough perhaps to boost gusts by 10 mph or so. Because the airmass is stable, this will mean that not only do exposed coasts and hills see very strong gusts, but some potentially damaging gusts may be experienced in the lee of high ground, as for example in northeast England, northeast Wales and southeast Scotland.

Spells of heavy rain are expected on Saturday and early Sunday. Given saturated ground and high river levels, be aware of the potential for localised flooding with some low level disruption looking likely.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

An active frontal system will arrive across northern and central parts of the UK on Saturday and into Sunday associated with strong winds and a stream of very moist air. This system is now expected to be further north and so the impacts over northern Wales are thought to be less significant than previously forecast. This system is still expected to generate some large rainfall accumulations within the warning area, especially across high ground. 20 to 40 mm could fall quite widely with over 60 mm possible across Snowdonia. Given the saturated state of the ground from recent rainfall, this amount of rain could lead to some localised flooding.

Yes, a wild weekend on the cards! Very wet and very windy with Inland gusts on Saturday of 70mph perhaps more in some places if the ''squeeze'' mentioned in the Met Office warning does increase gusts by 10mph.

Hi guys n gals ..I am in Grassington this weekend at family's for the Dickension festival and it looks to be an interesting day tomorrow. .no signs of them cancelling the day as yet..I am also right on the river so will keep you updated as the River Wharfe responds quite quickly here in Grassington to the rain falling up river..stay safe ☺☺

Extremely wet and windy conditions will persist countrywide tonight. Prolonged spells of heavy incessant rain, especially across the western half of the country, will lead to flooding and treacherous driving conditions. Southwesterly winds will remain as strong as they were during the daytime, if not stronger in some places. Lowest temperatures 9 to 11 degrees Celsius.

Tomorrow

Another exceptionally wet and windy day is in store for most parts of the country on Saturday. Extended periods of torrential rain in the northwest and west are likely to bring more widespread flooding to these areas. However, in southeastern counties, rain will become lighter and intermittent at times. There will be little or no abatement to the very strong, southwesterly winds. Highest temperatures 11 to 13 degrees Celsius.

Out of interest, how do airlines deal with this situation? I'll be surprised if much lands at any airport north of Manchester tomorrow, do planes carry extra fuel in case they need to divert a fair distance away (e.g. divert from Edinburgh to Luton)?

Yes, they always have enough for situations such as having to divert, or having to sit in a holding pattern etc.
