Scientists given £1m grant to research killer oak tree disease

Experts have warned that acute oak decline could prove disastrous for the English oak

Quote

Scientists have expressed "serious concern" about an emerging tree disease that could have grave consequences for the English Oak.

Researchers have received a £1 million grant to study the disease, called acute oak decline, amid fears that it could have an even bigger impact that Dutch elm disease, which destroyed more than 25 million UK elm trees.

Little is currently known about the disease and what causes it but it has spread over the past decade, prompting the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to fund new research.
