Thermal Vorticity

Whilst strolling around the lake this morning I was thinking about vorticity as one does on a sunny May morning. The reason for this was yesterday I was looking at a thermal vorticity chart and realised I didn't have clear understanding of what I was looking at. I realise it's the vorticity of the thermal wind (the strength and direction of which I assume must be important) between two designated pressure levels but also it must be more complicated than that and it doesn't explain the significance. A brief clarification would be much appreciated. No need to go into the vorticity equations :)
