Hi all sitting on balcony half mile from Disney in Florida.  Keeping an eye on Matthew.  Big storm happening at the moment with flash flood warnings for my area.  People here are not too phased by its impact on Orlando.  So am interested to be here to see what develops later on next week.

Matthew looks good this morning as it moves away from the coast.

We have a period of 5 hrs or so left with no real data.

Nhc have the track directly between the two islands. With different models taking him to each island. They also have him on a nnw track ATM which to be honest I don't see on sat I see a nw track and Matthew already west of the 12z position.

These little westward shifts matter not only to Jamaica and Haiti but also to the Bahamas and later in the run as per the westward shift of the latest ecm, mainland US.

.....isolated rainfall amounts of 40 INCHES !!!! in parts of Haiti and 25 inches in parts of Jamaica.

That's like throwing a bathtub of rain down every second,  not raindrops. ..

apparently there has never been a hurricaine thats tracked this far south on one news weather channel using records going back to late 1800s

Joan was definitely further south (it actually crossed the Guajira Peninsula).

Matthew might be the most southerly Cat. 5 on record in the Atlantic.

Not good. Haiti is particularly vulnerable to heavy rains, and the storm isn't forecast to pick up much speed before it leaves the region.

Just cannot imagine what that's like, accompanied by winds well in excess of 100mph too. A metre of rain...

My location in the west of Scotland which is pretty wet  by national averages receives about 1 meter of rain annually. to get that in about 48hrs  really is unbelievable

Recon have done their first pass of the day.

Two important things for me.

First, pressure and winds speeds are pretty similar still. Pressure has risen a tad to 945mb or so.

Second, as per sat. Matthew is growing and developing. The hurricane winds and major hurricane winds are really starting to expand. pressure is starting to distribute further afield. I e Matthew is becoming more dangerous and more able to successfully perform an erc.

Sorry to ask but what does ERC stand for? :D

I'll ask the admins to add ERC into the "hover over" acronym explanation thingy. If anyone has got any other suggestions to add, do shout :)

Latest recon found more secondary wind maxima so it's definitely occurring and the system has gone west of the forecast track.

Looks good though..

Nowhere. But in which way is a hurricane slamming into the West Indies 'looking good'? Sorry, if I fail to appreciate all the 'goodness' - I guess it's just the way I am?

None, obviously. SB is pointing out - quite rightly - how impressive the system looks.

Have to say it's scaring the beejebus out of me, and I'm nowhere near it. The formation is incredible but the damage it's going to inflict will be catastrophic

Come on Ed - self-righteous and preachy isn't really a good look.

Perhaps it's you who should 'come on', cheese? Why should I (or anyone else, for that matter) be waxing lyrical about a storm that 'might' kill - at least - quite a few people? Sorry, if I can't quite 'get on-board' with all the 'isn't Matthew great' stuff...But, hey, people are more important than perfect eye-walls - are they not?:cc_confused:

Whether we admire its appearance or not, the same terrible impacts will occur for a given path and intensity in the future.

Right before a tornado or indeed hurricane removed me from this world, I would not be at all surprised to find that amidst  all the screaming there was still a part of me marvelling at the phenomenon before my eyes.

Would that be the end of storm chasing in the states then Pete? People pay a lot of money in the hope of seeing an F5, and we all know what they can do.

Back on topic, and the power of mother nature is certainly something to behold, in this case the monster Matthew.
