October - Hobart, Tasmania

This was the first cooler-than-average month here since August 2015 ( 1981-2010 comparisons ). The mean temperature anomaly was -0.2C or -0.1C compared to 1961-90. The 13 month stretch of above normal temperatures falls well short of a 24 month stretch of warm anomalies from November 2011-October 2013.  This recent period of uninterrupted warmth was probably more significant though, as a clear majority of months were exceptionally warm, running at 1-2C above the 1981-2010 values.

Average maximum:  17.2 ( -0.1 )

Average minimum:  8.0 ( -0.3 )

Rainfall:  83mm ( average 61mm )

Rain days (+1mm):  14/from 19

Mid spring brought regular fronts often preceded by very windy weather from the west-north west. Scattered showers followed and cooler. There were no significant cold outbreaks this month but snow settling on the mountain range was fairly frequent, at elevation 700-900m. The mountain was snow capped on the morning of the 5th,10th-12th and 19th but it melted fast during the day. There was a deeper fall on the 22nd, and drifts were visible for a number of days from sea level. This coincided with Hobart's wettest day of the month, 17mm, then another 11mm in showers in the following 24 hours.

Extremes in daily temperature for October ( records since 1882 ):

Highest maximum;  26.1.....15th ( record 34.6 in 1987 )

Lowest maximum:  11.1.....12th ( record 6.0 in 1958 )

Highest minimum:  14.0.....16th ( record 20.2 in 1933 )

Lowest minimum:  3.7.....13th ( record 0.0 in 1889 )
