January has been a very interesting month in these parts. It seemed like a dry month, but rainfall ended up being above average. It turned out to be the wettest month within the last 10. The sunshine recorded at my station was slightly below average, but that is due to my solar sensor not getting a full day of light, so I would say that sunshine was slightly above average overall. The average temp came in below the MetO derived averaged for this area. I managed 8 consecutive frost days, and 13 frost days in total. Fog was prevalent too, almost 72 hours continuous on one occasion.

January ended up a cool dry month here, plenty of frosts and lots of foggy/cloudy days that kept the daytime temperatures down.

Most notable thing about January was how dry it was with just over 50% of the average rainfall, most of that we received on the first day and last day of the month.

Towards the end of the month during the period where we had slack continental flow we suffered around 5 days straight of low cloud and fog and scenes like this became the regular.

Highlight of the month was Friday the 13th where in the early hours we received 2cm of wet snow. This is our only day of lying snow so far this winter.

January - Hobart, Tasmania

Summer continues warmer than average without a single hot day. A hot day is classified as something over 33 in this part of the world. The warmer months will usually have a few. The January mean was +0.9C above the 1981-2010 average ( which are below in brackets ) or +1.2C above the 1961-90 period.

Average maximum:  23.0 ( +0.8 )

Average minimum:  13.5 ( +0.9 )

Rainfall:  60mm ( average 44mm )

Rain days ( +1mm ): 6/from 11

The wettest day was the 1st. 35mm fell in a few hours late in the day with thunder, as a low pressure trough and associated front crossed Tasmania, ending a prolonged humid period which began after Christmas. 19mm fell on the 20th/21st as a thermal trough extended south across the continent, forming a low over waters to Tasmania's north-east. Very cool winds from the east off the Tasman Sea with low cloud, and intervals of rain or drizzle. Foggy in the hill suburbs.  Southern Ocean fronts at two or three day intervals brought gusty conditions at times, temporary periods of cool and fresh air but little or no shower activity in Tasmania's east, which includes Hobart. .

Extremes in daily temperature for January ( records since 1882 ):

Highest maximum:  31.3.....8th ( record 41.8 in 2013 )

Lowest maximum:  15.8.....20th ( record 11.1 in 1885 )

Highest minimum:  20.3.....8th ( record 23.4 in 2013 )

Lowest minimum:  9.1.....17th ( record 3.3 in 1902 )

January a fairly uneventful month only two points of interest the 11th where winds hit 61 mph at dawn and 68 mph during the afternoon. The next point of interest was the 21st to the 28th which was very cold despite the lack of cold uppers bar one day. This period recorded the 1st ice day since feb 2013. Snow fell only one a half days and there wasn't any lying snow.  The month produced 10 air frosts yet only just managed to drop below average. The sixth driest month recorded a damp end to month pushed the month up from 5th driest. Oh another interesting thing on the ice day there was no frost the ground wasn't frozen and my car roof stayed wet throughout.

Average temp 3.9C just -0.3C below normal.

Rainfall 39.3mm 48% of average.

Days of wind over 50 mph Two days

Snowfall 2 days

Air frost 10 days.
