A stroll around Portreath

It was a glorious day yesterday so I had a stroll around Portreath, something I haven't done for a while. I posted a couple of pics elsewhere but I might as well post a few more.

Yes it was great day  weather wise and Portreath is a natural sun trap. Of course it's a completely different story with westerly gales. I didn't take any photos of the harbour entrance yesterday but I have on previous occasions and once in a F8. The narrow entrance must have been a nightmare to navigate in dodgy weather

Yesterday afternoon at about 15:30 we were alerted that a person was trapped on the cliff in Portreath opposite Gull Rock. The Coastguard Operations Centre also tasked our helicopter to Portreath as the initial 999 call gave the impression that is was going to be a cliff rescue. When we arrived at the beach we discovered that a sixteen year old male had climbed the cliff and entered the old adit below Battery House, made his way into the mine, somehow crossed the near vertical stope and then discovered he could not get back they way had entered. Trapped some forty feet above the beach inside the mine, if he had moved from his position he would have likely fallen down the stope into the sea cave below. The Portreath Rescue Team assisted by our colleagues from St. Agnes Coastguard Rescue Team lowered a cliff technician down from Battery Hill who tried to access the casualty using the mine adits, both above and below the trapped lad. Unfortunately this proved a possibly unsafe method of extraction and the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were requested to attend the sea cave on the beach with a long extending ladder. With the ladder in position at the bottom of the stope, the casualty was returned to the beach no the worse for his three hour ordeal other than to receive a good ribbing from his many friends who were waiting for him. We returned to our station at about 17.50. The picture below shows our Cliff Rescue Technician in the mine adit and members of HM Coastguard and the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service in the sea cave rigging the ladder.
