First big test for Meteo Group since they replaced the Met Office on the BBC

Have they actually moved to Meteo Group as their website still shows warnings copied from the Met Office ?

Recent changes to BBC Weather

BBC Weather has started working with new weather service provider MeteoGroup, so you may have noticed some changes to the BBC Weather website and apps on iOS, Android and Amazon Kindle.

NHS England are now at AMBER alert for their Cold weather planning. "This weather could increase health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt delivery of services" . Not the same as an AMBER severe weather warning from Met Office  https://www.england.nhs.uk/news/

I believe they still use the MetO warnings, but the forecasts come from MeteoGroup. As John Holmes has pointed out, that could lead to ridiculous mismatches.

"So to sum up, it's going to be fine and bright, but don't go outdoors because there's a massive storm warning."

A bit late now in the winter to even compare with 1947 ?

Well it’s quite a difference to begin with -yes

if this had come at the back end of a month like Dec 2010 then you could behind to think like that but even then it likely won’t have anything the longevity needed.

Freezing conditions to last into spring

Conditions over the weekend and into the early part of next week will become increasingly cold, possibly exceptionally cold.

A Yellow National Severe Weather Warning for snow is in force for parts of eastern and southeast England from 4pm on Monday and through Tuesday. Snow showers are expected to develop widely, with some locations likely to see accumulations of 5 to 10 cm. Although other sites may see less frequent showers leading to much smaller accumulations up to 2 cm.

The very cold conditions, which are likely to be the coldest spell of weather for several years, are likely to remain in place for the remainder of next week. The cold easterly wind will persist bringing a significant wind chill  which will make it feel several degrees colder than thermometers indicate. Even without the wind chill some locations will struggle to get above 0 °C by day, with night-time temperatures ranging down to -8 °C quite widely.

Paul Gundersen, a Met Office Chief Forecaster, said: “Parts of southern England and Wales are likely to the coldest spell of weather since 2013. Many places will be dry, but snow showers are expected to develop from Monday. There is the potential for some disruptive snowfall on Monday evening and through Tuesday. The regions most at risk of disruptive snow are parts of southeast England and East Anglia, although parts of northern England and eastern Scotland are also at risk. Transport disruption is likely in areas with significant snowfall.

“With such low temperatures, snowfall is likely to be powdery, bringing the risk of drifting in the strong easterly winds. However, the majority of the air is so dry that hoar frost and ice will be less likely to form.”

Although the cold spell is forecast to remain in place for some time, there is a large uncertainty in the potential for further snowfall.

Thursday is the first day of meteorological spring, but the high pressure over Scandinavia bringing the cold easterly flow is expected to remain in place for several days and there are signs that the cold spell in the UK is likely to last well into next week and perhaps into the following week.

So the BBC have finally caught on. But what a terrible dumbed down video explanation of why it is cold is included in this article.

They must assume that all their viewers are thick. Not the case at all. Insulting - they could be far more detailed in this. They didn't even mention a SSW.

Cannot remember the last time I watched an actual BBC weather forecast. They will end up looking stupid when next week is over. I presume we will see amber and possibly red warnings from Meto in the days ahead. The BBC will use these and then forecast mainly dry a few flurries and a temp of 4c. Embarrassing

No coincidence this impending cold spell is occuring on the back of the significant SSW, a proper split in the PV, and a major warming, average 10-14 days lag effect, 14 days will be the 25 Feb, bang on cue for the deep cold.

Or, it could be chilly with a few snow flurries and the 'experts' predicting Armageddon will yet again be left scratching their heads after yet another last minute downgrade.

If I were a betting man......

Wednesday

Between 00:05 Wed 28th and 23:55 Wed 28th

Heavy snow showers are expected on Wednesday. There is the potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel. Some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Showers will bring a large variation in amounts of snow across even small areas with some places seeing very little snow. There is the potential for 10-15 cm of snow in places where showers become more frequent whilst nearby locations may see much less frequent showers and only small accumulations of 1-3 cm in places. Strong winds will lead to drifting of snow, and lightning could be an additional hazard, particularly near North Sea, Irish Sea and English Channel coasts. By the end of Wednesday, more than 20 cm may have accumulated in places in some eastern counties of England, Scotland and Norther Ireland from a culmination of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday's snow showers.

Hydrometeorological institutes in Central Europe already issuing warnings for extreme cold. Big chance of arctic days in the coming week. The beast is already roaring outside with bitter wind and heavy snow showers.
