Some storms currently around Switzerland with a spell of warm weather. Unfortunately missed some nice cloud structure and rainbow upon arrival. A day or so later I managed to capture a downburst/very localised rain shower in the valley (Chateau d'Oex/Pays d'Enhaut). As it advanced, I could hear the rain roar, so to speak. A cool thing to see. Currently hearing thunder as I write but it isn't establishing and a lot of rain/mist around.

Hubs has just come back from a work trip to Zurich, and the weather there is just about the same as here.Cloudy, cool and no snow where he was. In fact it didn't he didn't see the sun in the 4 days he was there.

Lovely and sunny here since I arrived Tuesday, snow holding up quite well as far down as the village. Sorry that is Wengen. Watched the skiing from Kitzbuhel in a local restaurant, possibly the only none Swiss there. The atmosphere was great.

The latest from MeteoSwiss for Wengen suggests fairly large amounts of snow above the village and enough to cover the ground at village level (around 4,000 ft), so I guess the Alps generally are going to get their first large autumn snowfall.

The first mobile snow cannons at the top of the Lauberhorn start area seem to have been put out this morning, no sign of the main ones. Far too early I suspect.

    https://panocam.skiline.cc/lauberhorn

The Lauberhorn is going ahead after a row over cash between the local committee and the National organisation!

Not sure what effect Covid may have on it though. Normally there are 30,000+ on the main day, Saturday for the downhill, after Friday for the Combined and the Slalom on Sunday.

Covid must likely affect all the main Alpine events this coming winter, behind closed doors meaning no or very reduced spectators

This confirms that the Lauberhorn races this winter will all be run without any spectators; a huge financial loss to the village

A slight snowfall even into the valley at 2500 ft, snow cannons working hard close to the start gate for the Lauberhorn race, also I noticed at the finish. Quite late for the first decent cold snap this year.

Add this from the the Belle Vue hotel out over the Lauterbrunnen valley. It has had its first snowfall, so snow down to at least 2500 ft.

The web cams for the Jungfrau region show, for that area, plenty of snow, and some folk out skiing. I suspect all will be 'locals' as the Swiss, in spite of opening their resorts, are having trouble getting skiers from the UK and elsewhere let alone the hordes of Japanese that they largely built the Eiger Express for. Sad for so many wanting to ski this winter. Not sure how many of the World Cup ski races will be held either, again no spectators. Roll on next winter.

Not been in any season since October 2019. Seems a lifetime as try to go every year to my second home. (We have discussed before John)  Conditions look perfect for early season.  Not sure if I am a fan of V Bahn

It's ironic the Eiger Express part of it was the result of the Japanese tourists, I suspect, complaining how long it took via the railway be it via Wengen or Grindelwald, now they are not around due Covid when it opens!. They will be in the summer though so Wengen and Kleinne should be quieter, I hope.

Yes, my negativity is the effect on the environment/ view and the amount of extra tourists.  However,  the positive is the diversion of the tourists from the traditional routes as you say. Being an old timer  I am happier with the fantastic rail journey.

Just been doing a check on skiing in Switzerland. As the link I put out shows all going on in the Jungfrau region. Some ski resorts have closed, some have restrictions on numbers on lifts, gondolas etc, but by and large they seem to be thunmbing their nose at the other ski countries! Bit unusual it seems from them.

Travellers from UK will be banned from1 January it seems, partly Brexit but mainly due our high levels of Covid.

A view this morning of folk waiting at Wengen station to get up to the 'top', no fog up there but -11.3 C, reasonable socially distanced queuing!

The snow depth is good, over 200 cm and 50-60cm in the village

    A new season!

Fingers crossed I am able to get to Wengen January 2022

Some of the snow cannons were put out about 2 weeks or so ago. New snow fell 24 hours ago but only down to about 6,000 ft. Picture of snow at the start of the Lauberhorn downhill

More work, snow cannons and a solitary piste basher just above the start hut for the Lauberhorn, the Jungfrau report says 70 cm at the top, no depth for the bottom but it looks a decent depth in the village by the railway station.
