Japan's cherry blossom peak, this year, is the earliest since records began -- in 812AD... Another sign that AGW is real?

The early peak is thought to be linked to climate change as spring temperatures rise.

OLYMPICS - Tokyo2020 (in July 2021) Japan is hot and humid at this time of year and that is impacting the competitors. One uninvited guest to the Olympic Games is 'Typhoon' Nepartak, equivalent to an Atlantic Tropical Storm.

I’m not sure about the longer term outlook, but this BBC feature suggests the flooding rains will affect Tokyo also over the next few days

Hundreds of residents in southwest areas have been asked to evacuate to avoid floods and the risk of landslides caused by the unprecedented rains.

Not looking good based on current forecast for Kyushu Island, as Typhoon Nanmadol  heads in to hit the island.

The warning, only issued for the most extreme storms, means that forecasters predict a large-scale disaster that is only seen once every few decades.

Typhoon Shanshan makes landfall over Kyushu and looks to be moving NE right through Honshu and Shikoku.

Japan Meteorological Agency | Tropical Cyclone Information (jma.go.jp)

The key here isn't the wind - the storm has a central pressure of 992 MB which I don't find exceptional but the slow movement through the centre of Japan means a lot of rain - I've seen 767 mm recorded in one area which is two and a half feet in old money.

These storms have gathered a huge amount of tropical moisture but don't seem to have the wind power and field of a caribbean hurricane for example.
