We spoke to him on fizogtime.  He mentioned DANA.  I will have to read about it.  The only DANA we knew was a charming lass from NI who won the Eurovision song contest!

Nick's latest about the DANA in Spain this week.

An upper level low or DANA moves southwest over Iberia next few days bringing a new episode of intense rainfall and risk of flash-flooding to parts of southern and eastern Spain this week.

AEMET 'Meteorological phenomenon: Very heavy to torrential rains and showers. 2.-Geographic scope: Mediterranean coasts and western Andalusia.  Tuesday the 12th- At least until Friday the 15th. Degree of probability: Very high (greater than 70%). Meteorological situation: It is expected that during today, Tuesday, a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) moves from France towards the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, moving from northeast to southwest and remaining in our environment, at least until Friday the 15th. The increase in instability will go accompanied by the entry of a humid Mediterranean flow from the east, so it is very likely very strong and persistent rainfall, locally torrential, accompanied by of storms and maritime storms in the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean side; and, starting Thursday also in western Andalusia.' transl.

Storms hit Fuerteventura today.

Hailstones the size of golf balls in some parts of the island.

We're not there at the mo, but our usual place where we stay, Corralejo, was particularly bad today.

Interesting to note how similar the upper level disturbance bringing those storms are to the one that occured around the exact same date as last December. The only difference is that I won't be experiencing it as i'm not going there for Christmas!

Also some thundery showers moving through the Canarias today due to the same trough extending down. Good timing for @SiGh as he's going back home today!

Metwatch yep. As we approached the airport this morn, c10.00am, the clouds were bubbling up and by time we boarded it was raining a little. The pilot went South to avoid the more direct route out, over Lanzarote.

Going just south of Fuert meant we avoided the worst of the turbulence from the storm clouds on ascent, but as we were heading back over Lanzarote at altitude the crew were told to sit back in their seats and that's when we had a bumpy few mins.

Weather's been great for January; just 2 cloudy days.

I noticed that earlier as well! I think only once I experienced the south-bound departure from the Island and that was when there was no wind at all. It's usually done when the winds blow from the south / southwest which is pretty rare there (nearly as rare as north easterlies / easterlies in the UK in winter these days) as planes take off into the wind for safety.

Typical pattern flip when it occurs in the colder half of the year. As high pressure builds northward into the UK and central Europe turning it drier and sunnier here, it turns unsettled for Iberia / Canarias. They need the rain much more than us of course.
