I have a few memories and images of that.  I was 23 had just been posted to Prestwick.  I was keen on wild camping and the hills, so was soon regularly on the Isle of Arran.

Following text accompanies (on Flickr site) a photo taken in Arran, Glen Rosa, summer 1968.

“Radio picked up BBC Radio 1 strongly.

Kenny Everett playing the latest hits (Beatles "White Album", “Say a little prayer” Aretha Franklin, etc.).  I recall traffic reports of floods in southern England, whilst Scotland had a great summer. “

2nd photo was taken at Warfield, Berkshire, where stream had burst its banks at farm my future wife lived at. I also remember hearing mention of A329 problems due flooding as I lay outside my tent in the sun!

IslaArklayblend Also thanks from me. Memories are brought back to me as well in my personal life of not quite as long as A Face like Thunder.

Weather programme back on Ch 5 on Tuesday at 9pm, but with the focus on the floods of July 1968 rather than the cancelled programme on the September 1968 floods. Let's hope Ch 5 don't find they need to replace the programme again with a programme on royalty (actual and ex-).

An excellent programme in my view and well worth a catch-up if you didn't see it tonight. A repeat of Britain's 'Killer Hurricane of 1990' (the Burns Day Gale to you and me) is on Ch 5 on Friday at 9pm and is again worth a watch. Hoping that the cancelled programme on the Floods in SE England in September 1968 is aired soon.

Data taken from an Oxford weather station shows that 88mm of rain fell on the 11th of July, 1968 with a high of just 16.9C. What an abysmal high summer day!
