Snow & Ice coverage in the Northern Hemisphere Winter 2021/22

It would be great if the Northern Sea Ice extent could get anywhere near as close to the median as the Southern Ice this coming winter. There is an opportunity in the North to make some gains as the ice extent survived the summer better than for a while.

Canadian snow also makes an appearance at the same time as the Siberian snow expands.

Sea Ice Volume review at the end of August showed that volume had followed the trends of the last 6 weeks and was still in 7th position.

This was despite  the extent being in 10th /11th position and therefore shows that thickness is still fairly weak.

Attached is the current DMI map for reference.

image.thumb.png.7d19322a21d3cd814fcf1deff2fd6db1.png

Sea Ice volume, according to DMI, has now past its low for the year.

Masie extent now down to just above 5,000K Km2  at 5.048K Km2, after a reduced melt of 64K Km2 yesterday.

Lets hope for a good week next week, and that when I return the growth both in snow and ice will be increasing.

Found this satellite pic of the Siberian Coast SW of Wrangle Island. You might have to zoom in some but it's high def and shows it well. There's 10-20% ice there and probably some new frasil/grease ice that does not show. Note the snow on the mountains and sea ice growing away from the Siberian coast. Daily temperature range on land there is about  -5C by day to -10C at night - and falling - but sea temperature is hovering around 0C. A gentle offshore breeze would likely drop the temperature significantly and set off refreezing.

Hi guys, back early from my 5 day golf holiday in Bridlington.

Snow has virtually disappeared in North America, but seems to be hanging on in Siberia.

image.thumb.png.6a0185118d564fa85b19fe25f3b048e4.png

As per my pre-hol post above,  ice growth looks to have taken over in the Arctic in the last 5 - 6 days..

Since the 13th Sept Arctic Sea Ice has increased for 4 consecutive days on JAXA - 114K Km2 total, and it looks as if the official refreeze season has been declared.

Masie has, once again, behaved erratically, with a huge drop  (for end of season) of 255K Km2 in 2 days from the 12th to a season low 4,890K Km2. This is about 1,250K Km2 greater than last year (about 30% increase).

Since then Masie has gained by 246K, 44K and 2K, more than offsetting the large drop prior to the season low.

It is believed that Masie (being more sensitive), picks up more on the large movement in the ice as the winds push the thinner ice around quite a bit.

This makes it quite difficult to spot the actual 'season low' date.

Weather conditions are about to change in the Arctic again, and I  will be back (when more time permits) to give a report, and a more general roundup.

By the way good to see KW's posts of early snows in Finland.

Extent was the 13th, highest since 2014.

Area was the 1st which may be the highest since 1992.

Snow now spreading along the North Russian coastline.

More consistent snowfall in Siberia.

Video of last 7 days here -

Sea Ice still growing slowly but it is now 30% above the 10year average for this date.

Also the animation above shows the southward expansion  now occurring in the polar ice pack.

Here's another pic of ice around Wrangle Island. I'm not sure if there is any obvious increase in the scattered ice but there's a bit more ice in the bays along the Siberian Coast.

As Turnedoutniceagain posted above more general increases in snow in both Americas and Europe yesterday.

Ice continues to grow steadily on JAXA  (between 20 and 40K Km2) each day, but Masie is going through another mini 'crisis' with losses of over 100K and 30K Km2 in the last 2 days to give us a low of 5,048KKm2 currently. but still not lower than the still current low of 5,022K Km2. AND still above the politically sensitive number of 5.000K KM2.

Low pressure is now taking over in the Arctic and the temperature above 80degrees (as given by DMI) looks to be fairly stable, but losing its contact with the 1970 -2000 medium line that it started the season by faithfully following..

 image.thumb.png.ad40594dfe706c9f8597a73189f4f939.png

Temperature are forecast to fall in both N America and Russia/Siberia over the next 10days so hopefully snow cover will become more extensive there.

Alaska suddenly  sees a large snowfall.

Scattered snow continues in Siberia and is now spreading further west into central Russia.

this is very early compared to the recent past.

Could it be the first indication of a true Siberian winter this year -  after an absence of about 8 years?.

MIA

Not sure your correct here, several years in the last decade have had very high snowcover.

SB...

 Todays data supplied here -

ims2021264_alaska.gif

I went back thru the archive to 2016 (for todays date - 21/9).

You are half correct.

Alaska is at one of its highest for the date,  for the last 6years..

Siberia is just over half way up, whilst Russia is definitely mid pack.

So it is doing OK, but not quite as good as I suggested.

Yes, North and West Iceland experiencing an early taste of winter, absolute belter of a snow storm hitting at the moment!  Although not unusual to get snow in late September the intensity is quite something to view on the web cams for this time of year.
