Monday 23 Jan - Wednesday 1 Feb

On Monday, widespread cloud with light rain and drizzle is likely for most, though eastern and southeastern parts could remain dry. High pressure is expected to dominate for much of the rest of January, bringing more settled conditions for many. Drier weather is most probable as a result, particularly to the south and east. Any persisting unsettled conditions will most likely be confined to the northwest, with stronger winds and rain at times, perhaps turning heavier over hills. Temperatures are most likely to be close to or slightly above average overall, especially further northwest. Colder days and nights are more likely further south given settled conditions and clearer skies, along with the risk of fog or freezing fog.

Thursday 2 Feb - Thursday 16 Feb

A continuation of settled weather is most likely through the first week of February, with drier weather expected to remain for the southeast, and unsettled conditions largely confining to the northwest. Thereafter, unsettled conditions could become more widespread, bringing the possibility of heavier rain and stronger winds across the country. Temperatures likely to be around or slightly above average, with any colder spells being short-lived.

It is interesting to see both the Met Office and the BBC acknowledging the SSW possibility in public forecasts (albeit not ones seen by many people) - does anyone know whether they have done this in previous years?

Yes, they've tended to start mentioning them as and when one may be possible, because the media like to start picking up on the possibility and banging on about beasts from the east's etc. So, I think they like to try to get out in front of that!

Tuesday 24 Jan - Thursday 2 Feb

Tuesday is likely to bring cloudy weather with drizzle in places, mainly in the west. More persistent rain is possible in the northwest, accompanied by strong winds. Rain will generally clear by through Wednesday as high pressure is expected to build to the west, generally bringing a period of more generally settled weather. It is likely to be dry for most, particularly in the south and east, though there is a chance of showers along eastern coasts. Any returning unsettled weather will likely confine to the northwest, with stronger winds and heavier rain possible at times. Temperatures are expected to drop to around the seasonal norm, perhaps slightly above average in the northwest. Some fog or freezing fog possible, where winds are likely to be lighter in the west.

Friday 3 Feb - Friday 17 Feb

High pressure is expected to dominate at first with dry weather widespread. With the calm weather, there is a risk of fog or freezing fog overnight. The northwest may experience more unsettled weather with rain and strong winds. Later, a more unsettled period is expected more widely with rain, and windy conditions affecting all areas. Temperatures are most likely to be near normal or above average for the time of year. This unsettled period is expected to extend into mid-February.

Still not looking too promising in the extended with even the possibility of brief cold spells dropped from the update.

Yes, today's extended outlook from the Met Office is a concern up to mid February at least.  Like you say, not even a caveat used that confidence is low?

The change to milder conditions will continue to be delayed into the new coming week with cold and frosty conditions remaining across all areas of England. It will be mainly dry although freezing fog may be a hazard as well as some ice. There remains some uncertainty about milder air spreading from the northwest later next week and an update will be issued no later than Monday 23 January.

All of the regional comments read: Cold and frosty weather will affect the region, with ice also a hazard. No significant snowfall is forecast.

Wednesday 25 Jan - Friday 3 Feb

Cloud and outbreaks of rain are likely on Wednesday, possibly locally heavy rain at times especially in the north, although the rain tending to become confined further south by the end of the day. Later in the week, high pressure is predicted to dominate over the UK, resulting in a largely settled weather pattern, although some showers still possible in places. Unsettled weather may return in the northwest at the end of the week and into the weekend. Temperatures most likely around normal, with the potential for some overnight frosts. Further into the period, high pressure and settled conditions are predicted to continue for most. The south and east likely seeing the most of the dry weather, although showers likely along eastern coasts.

Saturday 4 Feb - Saturday 18 Feb

High pressure is expected to dominate at first with dry weather widespread. With the calm weather, there is a risk of fog or freezing fog overnight. The northwest may experience more unsettled weather with rain and strong winds. Thereafter slightly more unsettled weather may develop widely across the UK, with rain and winds likely moving in from the west. Temperatures are most likely to be near normal or above average for the time of year.

Thursday 26 Jan - Saturday 4 Feb

Much of the UK will see sunny spells on Thursday, following some mist or fog patches in the morning under clear skies. Some cloud is expected to develop across the north, perhaps bringing some rain or drizzle to the north and northwest. Isolated showers possible along eastern coasts. Into the weekend, frontal systems could bring showers at times as they move in from the northwest, weakening as they progress. The south and southwest are expected to be the driest. Generally breezy with the chance of strong winds in the far northeast and east. Into February, settled conditions expected to dominate, especially across the south. Temperatures generally near normal, but frosts remain possible, mainly in the south, given clear skies and light winds.

Sunday 5 Feb - Sunday 19 Feb

The start of the period is likely to see a northwest-southeast split developing, bringing the driest and most settled conditions to the southeast while the north remains more unsettled with wet and windy weather. Later in the period, changeable conditions are expected to become more widespread, with the north continuing to see the most unsettled weather. In the south and southeast, settled conditions are more likely, but the occasional period of rain or showers remains possible. Temperatures generally slightly above average, but brief, colder spells are possible, especially to start.

Friday 27 Jan - Sunday 5 Feb

On Friday, fine weather is expected at first in the south, with some patchy frost and fog possible. Cloud and outbreaks of light rain and drizzle are likely across in northwest spreading southeast throughout the day. Further spells of persistent rain, with strong winds, are expected in the northwest later. For the rest of the period, dry and clear conditions, with sunny spells are expected across many places. Rainbands could spread from the northwest at times, weakening as they move southeastwards. As a result, rain and wintry showers are expected in the north and northwest, with isolated rain across the southern and southeastern areas. Strong winds with gales are likely in the far north. Temperatures overall will be near normal to mild, with overnight frost.

Monday 6 Feb - Monday 20 Feb

The start of the period is likely to see a northwest-southeast split developing, bringing the driest and most settled conditions to the southeast while the north remains more unsettled with wet and windy weather. Later in the period, changeable conditions are expected to become more widespread, with the north continuing to see the most unsettled weather. In the south and southeast, settled conditions are more likely, but the occasional period of rain or showers remains possible. Temperatures generally slightly above average, but brief, colder spells are possible, especially to start.

Saturday 28 Jan - Monday 6 Feb

On Saturday, cloud and patchy rain are likely across the south, this clearing during the afternoon. A mixture of sunny spells and showers is expected further north, but with further clouds and outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading towards northern and northwestern areas later. For the rest of the period, variable amounts of cloud, and often dry conditions are expected in most parts of the UK. However, rain bearing weather systems are likely to spread from the west or northwest at times. As a result, rain and wintry showers are expected to be focused in the north and northwest, with southeastern areas predominantly dry. Strong winds with gales are possible in the far north. Temperatures generally will be near normal overall, with overnight frosts possible under the clearer spells.

Tuesday 7 Feb - Tuesday 21 Feb

During the period, generally changeable weather conditions are expected across the UK. Settled and dry weather conditions are expected in the south at first, while unsettled, wetter and windy weather conditions will be more persistent across the north. Temperatures overall will be near normal, but colder with possible overnight frost at first.

Sunday 29 Jan - Tuesday 7 Feb

On Sunday, cloud across the northwest could bring periods of rain and drizzle, especially for western Scotland. Elsewhere, central and eastern parts could see some brighter spells, particularly in the lee of higher ground. Temperatures mild in the north, but around average in the south. Into next week, frontal systems approaching from the northwest could bring some periods of heavier rainfall or showers, this weakening as the fronts move southwards. Parts of the south could remain largely dry, while the north may see more spells of wet and windy weather further in the period. Strong winds in the north with possible gales, but generally light or moderate winds in the south. Temperatures generally around average, perhaps slightly above average for a time. Overnight frosts remain possible under clear skies.

Wednesday 8 Feb - Wednesday 22 Feb

During this period, frontal activity and associated changeable weather conditions are likely to bring rainfall, heavy at times, to the north and west. The south and east are expected to see some lighter rain or showers at times, interspersed with some drier and brighter periods. A brief spell of more settled conditions is possible in the middle of the period, bringing a greater risk of overnight frost and freezing fog, especially under clear skies with light winds. Temperatures are expected to be generally at or slightly above average, although a brief colder spell remains possible.

Monday 30 Jan - Wednesday 8 Feb

Likely cloudy with occasional rain or drizzle in the south at first on Monday. Clearer in the north with sunny spells interspersed with a few showers, this extending south through the day. Windy in the north and east but lighter winds elsewhere. Temperatures around normal for the time of year. Into mid-week, frontal systems are expected to spread from the northwest. These could bring some periods of prolonged rainfall or heavier showers to the north, with the risk of gales here. However any wet weather weakening as the fronts move southwards. Parts of the south could remain mostly dry, while the north may see more wet and windy weather further into the period. Temperatures varying between mild, especially in the north, and cool, with a frost risk remaining.

Thursday 9 Feb - Thursday 23 Feb

During this period, frontal activity and associated changeable weather conditions are likely to bring rainfall, heavy at times, especially to the north and west.

Tuesday 31 Jan - Thursday 9 Feb

Tuesday likely cloudy with rain in the north, especially the northwest, clearing to sunny spells and blustery showers. Initially mostly dry in the south with some sunshine, but likely becoming cloudier with some patchy rain later. Into the rest of the period, the main theme is of high pressure centred to the south, with low pressure systems passing to the north. This will result in frontal systems spreading from the northwest, bringing spells of wet and windy weather mainly to the north and northwest. However, the south is also likely to see some rain at times. In any colder interludes between frontal systems, we will likely see a mixture of sunshine and showers, perhaps wintry in the northeast. Temperatures generally varying between mild and cool, with a frost risk remaining.

Friday 10 Feb - Friday 24 Feb

The general theme for this period is that the high pressure will remain centred to the south, but may reduce in influence, allowing the frontal systems from the north to push further south at times. This frontal activity and associated changeable weather is likely to bring rainfall, sometimes heavy, especially to the north and west, but also to the south at times. Overall rainfall amounts likely to be below average in the south and east, and near or a little above normal in the north and northwest for the time of year. Temperatures are likely to be at or slightly above average, although brief colder spells remain possible.

Wednesday 1 Feb - Friday 10 Feb

On Wednesday, unsettled and windy conditions in the north with showers or longer spells of rain, heaviest and most persistent in the west. Conditions likely drier and less windy further south. Towards the end of the week, these conditions likely to continue with perhaps the risk for winter showers in the northeast. Thereafter, high pressure centred to the south, with low pressure passing to the north. This will result in fronts bringing rain and cloud mainly to the north and northwest, with southern areas also likely to see some lighter rain at times, but greater potential for drier weather overall, lighter winds and overnight fog patches. Temperatures generally around to a little above average, but a continuing risk of some overnight frost, especially in the south.

Saturday 11 Feb - Saturday 25 Feb

The general theme for this period is that the high pressure will remain centred to the south with further areas of low pressure running to the north, but with some uncertainty in this north/south boundary. For a time, the influence of the high may reduce, allowing the frontal systems from the north to push further south at times. This frontal activity and associated changeable weather is likely to bring rainfall, sometimes heavy to move areas of the UK. Otherwise, southern areas probably seeing more in the way of drier weather, lighter winds, and overnight fog. Temperatures are likely to be at or slightly above average, although brief colder spells remain possible.

Thursday 2 Feb - Saturday 11 Feb

On Thursday, cloud and outbreaks of rain will slowly move across the north of the UK, with heavier bursts for the northwest at first, while the south is more likely to stay dry with sunny intervals. Strong winds will mainly confine to the north early in the day. Towards the weekend and into next week, uncertainty is high regarding a regional split of conditions. The most likely scenario brings showers, longer spells of rain and strong winds to the north, with the wettest conditions in the northwest. The south is more likely to remain largely dry with lighter winds. Temperatures are expected to remain near to or slightly above average for most, although clearer conditions bring a risk of overnight fog and frost for the south.

Sunday 12 Feb - Sunday 26 Feb

While uncertain, a continuation of the regional divide between the north and south is expected as the broad theme for this period. Unsettled conditions are more likely to dominate in the north while the south remains settled and drier. A spell of more widely spread wet and windy weather is likely to persist for several days across all areas, although wettest conditions will focus in the west. Temperatures are most likely to remain around average or above.
