Winds of that speed normally come from the west or north-west and cause problems at the best of times, but to have those sort of gusts from the north would be highly unusual and would cause much more damage.

I think the 18z is showing a mean windspeed of about 60mph on the northumberland coast.

Agreed, trees here are used to 60 - 70mph westerlies but not northerlies that could be even higher than that in places. Lots of branches and trees down i would think.

Potential storm surge to go with all that wind too.

Thank god the spring tides of last weekend have given way to neap tides, otherwise this would have definitely been a disaster in the making along the entire East coast.

Quite an astonishing difference that 30-50 miles makes with this. If the above is anything to go by, it would place me in light southerlies for a brief time, wondering what all the fuss is about, compared to others, which have screaming northerlies at 60mph within the same time frame! This is nuts.

I zoomed in, 90-93mph on the coast on this one all the way from Whitley Bay right down to Hartlepool (and probably further north but can't see), spots over 96mph.

The 18Z UKV has the system ever so slightly further west. No change across the northeast in terms of wind speeds, but an uptick for the coasts of Wales / Irish sea. 80 to 90mph.

The north coasts of Devon and Cornwall show a noticeable increase too.

Agrred we build with our normal weather patterns in mind, and so does nature, trees may be taken off guard on the weaker side re root systems.

Looking at 70-80mph fairly widely tomorrow night?

This looks potentially dangerous

I suspect we may see the amber warning increase in coverage soon enough.

Given it will be a Friday night with people out and about, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a red issued for parts of the NE.

Haha, worst should have passed by then.

11pm-3am looks dicey for our area.

Gusts along the coast of SE Scotland and NE England could easily top 90mph, it's a pretty exceptional situation.

Slight shift west amongst the models this morning but still plenty of give in the positioning of this low on a micro scale. Let’s see how it pans out today.

Somewhere is getting a clobbering though. Red warning will likely go out for the NE later on. Swathe of N England and N Wales will probably go amber.

Quite exciting following this. I'm NE Scotland (Arbroath) right on the coast. Might need to get the camera out down near the harbour!

Could be a fun night out if you’re going drinking in Edinburgh or Newcastle

in all seriousness with Xmas markets and it being a Fri eve wonder if we see red warnings for some areas ?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a red warning Joe - you make a good point regarding Xmas markets and the likely foot traffic they generate.

Even without that though, the charts I'm seeing people link to warrant a red, IMO.
