I have never heard thunder on Christmas Day. In this article from the Guardian of 27th December 1947, it mentions thunderstorms in the south of Christmas Day 1947. London had not seen a thunderstorm since at least 1869 on Christmas nor Boxing Day. It seemed that the remarkable year of 1947 should have thunder on Christmas day

I remember reading about thunderstorms reported on Christmas Day in 1989 & 1990 giving the impression that it was the only time relatively widespread reports of thunder on the big day was recorded two years in a row.

As for 1947, it seems fitting that the year that had literally everything would end with firecrackers on Christmas Day. A truly remarkable year for weather.

I was not around in 1947. I don't remember 1989 as being anything out-of-the ordinary, but I do recall Christmas Day 1990 as being stormy, with frequent rain and sleet showers + wind in Blackpool where I was living at the time. Philip Eden comments "a swarm of tornadoes caused mainly minor structural damage at several locations throughout England and Wales" on CD 1990 which, although I don't recall it, seems to validate your view about thunder on that day..

Interesting the pressure wasn't very low, almost 1015mb in the south, IMX pressure needs to be pretty low, around 1000mb or so for winter thunderstorms.

1989 I remember as very mild westerly weather with some brightness at times, but don't recall thunder. 1990 I remember rain and wind, but no storms.
