The lowest daily mean (1772-2021) was -7.7 in 1987. Other low daily means were -6.9 in 1838, -6.7 in 1789, -6.3 in 1963, -5.7 in 1814, -5.4 in 1792, -4.8 in 1820, -4.7 in 1780, -3.7 in 1826 and 1982, -3.6 in 1802, -3.5 in 1871, -3.4 in 1795, -3.3 in 1879, -3.2 in 1867 and 1895, and -3.0 in 1881.

The highest maximum (1878-2021) was 13.1 in 2007. This replaced 12.2 from 1984, which had replaced 11.6 from 1948. Other mild days include 11.4 in 1994, 11.3 in 1890 and 1976, 11.2 in 1920 and 1938, and 10.9 in 1932, 1937, 2011 and 2012.

The highest minimum (1878-2021) was 8.4 in 1976. Other mild minimum readings were 7.9 in 1975, 7.3 in 2012 and 7.1 in 2020.

The lowest maximum (1878-2021) was -5.7 in 1987. This was the lowest value in January and the entire year, in the data interval 1878-2021, but it is quite possible that 20 Jan 1838 had a lower maximum and there would be a few other possible occasions. Other cold values were -2.4 (1963), -0.7 (1982), -0.2 (1977), -0.1 (1895), 0.2 (1881), 1.1 (1880), 1.3 (1968), 1.4 (1914) and 1.5 (2010).

The lowest minimum (1878-2021) was -10.1 in 1963. Other cold minima include -9.7 in 1987, -9.5 in 1879, -7.2 in 1892, -6.8 in 1982, -6.3 in 1895, -6.2 in 1881 and 1908, -6.1 in 1940, -5.5 in 1968, -5.4 in 1942, -5.2 in 2003, -4.5 in 1955 and -4.0 in 1891.

The wettest 12th of January (1931-2021) in the EWP data was 13.22 mm (2017), followed by 13.05 mm (1984), 12.29 mm (1948), 11.04 mm (1969), 10.33 mm (2015) and 10.05 mm (2000). (note: A total precip of 12 mm 11th-14th 1987 can be assumed to be 12-20 cm snowfalls depending on ratios).

The wettest week ending 12th January (6th - 12th Jan) was 76.00 mm in 1948, followed by 52.17 mm (2011), and 48.51 mm (2016). The 76 mm is the highest weekly total where all days are within January.

The least amount falling in a week ending 12th January was 0.70 mm in 1973, then 2.01 mm in 2019, 2.23 mm in 1963, 2.94 mm in 1980 and 2.95 mm in 2012.

At the rate things are going the month may never reach 55 mm EWP which is the lowest forecast. If that's the case (even 57 mm) then the order of finish is basically the same as the list of forecasts in order, but read from the dry end to the wet end. Godber1 has the lowest forecast of 55 mm followed by the PIT at 65 mm.

The top ten annual scores if this comes to pass would be:

freeze, Godber1, RJS, seaside60, Feb91Blizzard, Sleety, daniel*, noname_weather, Mr Maunder, February1978.

11-20 would be

virtualsphere, Midlands Ice Age, dancerwithwings, Stewfox, Mulzy, Ed Stone, stevew, davehsug, the PIT and Weather26.

A caveat would be that two recent months were looking dry then model changes showed up around the 20th and they ended up closer to normal or even wet. But that's how things would stand if the month remains below 58 mm. Even 59-70 mm would not change this very much as most of the forecasts are well above 70 mm.

The highest daily mean (1772-2021) was 10.0 in 1796 and 1873, 2007 almost created a three-way tie at 9.9. Besides those three, other mild days included 9.7 in 2011, 9.6 in 1996, 9.4 in 1976, 9.3 in 1849 and 2019, 9.1 in 1804, 9.0 in 1773, 1944 and 1998, 8.8 in 1834 and 1948, 8.7 in 1904, and 8.6 in 1790, 1875 and 1920.

The lowest daily mean (1772-2021) was -6.6 in 1987 which barely edged out previous record -6.5 from 1820. Other low daily means were  -6.1 in 1780 and 1982, -5.1 in 1792, -5.0 in 1867, -4.9 in 1826, -4.4 in 1963, -4.3 in 1838, -4.1 in 1802 and 1814, -3.9 in 1979, -3.6 in 1789, -3.1 in 1803, and -2.9 in 1823 and 1881.

The highest maximum (1878-2021) was 12.3 in 2011. This replaced 12.1 from 1948 tied by 1989. Other mild days include 11.9 in 1944, 11.6 in 1904, 11.5 in 1915, 11.4 in 1986, 11.1 in 2007, and 10.9 in 1996.

The highest minimum (1878-2021) was 8.8 in 2007. Other mild minimum readings were 8.4 in 1996, 8.1 in 1976, 8.0 in 2019, 7.3 in 1998 and 7.1 in 2011.

The lowest maximum (1878-2021) was -3.5 in 1987. Other cold values were -2.8 (1982), -0.4 (1880), -0.3 (1955 and 1963), -0.2 (1985), 0.1 (1881), 0.2 (1960), 0.3 (1903), 0.8 (1979), 0.9 (2010) and 1.2 (1887 and 1926).

The lowest minimum (1878-2021) was -9.6 in 1987, which broke a record of -9.4 from 1982, which in turn had beaten -8.6 from 1979. It is rare to see any minimum record broken three times in relatively recent decades. Before 1979 the lowest value had been -8.4 from 1963. (1820 was likely in the range of any of these four). Other cold minima include -6.4 in 1908, -5.9 in 1881, -5.6 in 1940, -5.1 in 1922, -4.7 in 1879, -4.6 in 1955, -4.5 in 1903, -4.3 in 1892 and 1913, -4.1 in 1968 and -4.0 in 1918.

The wettest 13th of January (1931-2021) in the EWP data was 16.69 mm (1977), followed by 14.92 mm (2021), 14.31 mm (1965), 12.19 mm (1955 and 1993), 11.66 mm (1934), 10.67 mm (1968), and 10.25 mm (1998). Some or all of the 1955 precip was probably snow.

The wettest week ending 13th January (7th - 13th Jan) was 63.32 mm in 1948, followed by 48.29 mm (1993).

The least amount falling in a week ending 13th January was 1.77 mm in 1967, 2.08 mm in 1950, 2.28 mm in 2019, 2.43 mm in 2012, 2.48 mm in 1963, 2.74 mm in 1953, 3.03 mm in 1980 and 3.05 mm in 1997.

EWP update, as you'll see in the almanac, week-length dry spells are uncommon in January but this one seems set to run out to about three weeks. We had reached 29 mm a few days ago, and the projection after ten more days is little more than 30 mm. That would rank 12th driest January, with 26 more that could be passed with as little as 10 mm additional (to reach 40 mm). Whether we see that much in any breakdown of this static pattern or not remains to be seen and 2022 could end up in the middle of that logjam of very similar amounts between 30 and 35 mm (35.0 mm would be 25th driest). At that outcome, it would be the driest January since 2006 (31.9 mm, 16th driest). We have already passed 5th driest 1997 (16.5 mm). Many of the dry Januaries are rather cold and few are in the mildest third (this one is gradually sinking into the middle third for temperature and the current GFS run out to the end of the month suggests a finish in the 4.0 to 4.5 range as colder air arrives increasingly often).

Most dry Januaries are well back in the past, the median of all years in the 41 driest is 1858 while the median of years in the data set (1766 to 2021) is 1893.5. In fact to find five in this century (2001 to 2021) or six counting 2000, requires going to 116th driest (these are 2006, 2000, 2019, 2005, 2012, and 2010 in order of dry ranks). The median is at 128th place.

Mid month point and we are finally in the 5s.. difficult to predict what the CET will do second half, but looks fairly chilly for the foreseeable, average or slightly above.. not expecting a significant downward trend, but hedge a bet final figure could be in the high 4s, possibly low 5s, if we have a cold end or mild end, then lower 4s, or higher 5s conversely.

Mmm these figures look dubious to me.. yesterday was cold in the CET zone widespread frost.. expecting marked downward corrections this month, I'd say we are probably nearer to 5 degrees now.
