The night of the 15th/16th February 1962 was an unforgettable night for the residents of Sheffield. Gale force winds enhanced by funnelling  and an inversion caused enormous damage to the city.

Yes I remember it well, was on a night duty at Langar Met Office. Windy but not aware until my relief arrived at just how bad Sheffield had been hit. I lived near Chesterfield and went home that morning, nothing showing at first but tiles, chimney pots, trees all over the place by the time I got home. Relatives lived in Ecclesall but were spared the worst.

    Truly awful.

I remember it well too. The most severe gale I've experienced by some margin. It's the only time I've seen trees actually falling as I watched, and tiles being blown from roofs like small flocks of birds taking off. The amount of tree and property damage was huge and in my lifetime, in this area, only the gale of early January 1976 is in the same league.
