Butlin's tornado of August 1989

    I totally forgot this event until when I was going through the Guardian archives when I spotted it and it triggered the memory.  A tornado hit the Butlin's holiday camp at Pwllhelli on the evening of 14th August 1989

    what an awful music choice for a tornado, especially covering the damage

    Firstly they estimated the damage at £2million, at least triple that at todays prices then said they were confident that the accommodation would be repaired by the following week.

    they must have had a hell of a good maintenance crew on standby

    seriously though, I can’t remember this happening although apart from a solitary visit to Minehead the year before, I’ve never been a Butlins follower.
