I'm not entirely sure it's going to be as active as some other forecasters suggest. I'm a bit skeptical about chasing today, but will make the drive should a cell become organised enough to utilise some upper level wind shear, though am working this evening eek!

Hahaha to be honest I've got to walk down to work at 3 lol I'm hoping it's not active 🤣 but as it's 27/28c in parts already today, I'd say that with maximum diurnal heating occurring and no cloud cover here in luton. Looks to be good some fluffy low level cumulus but that's it. Always a good sign 🙂 anyway good luck to all 🙂

feels far to windy  / gusty again here for anything to materialise..  i thought it was going to happen last night (like a few people did because of the heat..) instead it seemed to just fizzle out.  that said - it's not gone below 17 degrees, and it's definitely more humid now than it has been for days - so perhaps we'll have more luck today.   looks like another warm weekend, so think there might be more chances of storms for over the weekend / early next week

I’m going to find an open space locally and look up. Can’t believe the forecasts are literally singling out our area for the best chances. Great stuff!

in fact where I was yesterday evening is 10 mins from home and has excellent unobstructed views to the far SE and NW

Weighing tried & tested against new & exciting

Sounds like a good method mate ! Lovely day for it not S blistering as yesterday and a nice breeze in the last hour or so. Maybe it's them breeze CZ setting up 😉

It tends to be usually the south east or further west in Cornwall that do well Thunderstorms, not had any Thunderstorms storms here in Exeter other than a flash for a couple years the last good one was several years ago

Hi all, Question - Yesterday in Newcastle just after 4pm it was hot around 36oc with a very warm breeze, High thin cloud / Slight hazy sun, No developing Anvils or elavated shower clouds from what i could see. Then suddenly at complete random the breeze just changed to a very hot wind, In my 42 years i have known nothing like it, I can only describe it as a heater being turned on or someone opening an oven door, It was incredible, The heat in that wind was surreal. This happened for about 30 minutes then became a very warm light breeze again. Can someone please explain what this was because it was awesome. I have read a thread about a rare phenomenon called a heat burst where the temperature at ground level can increase rapidly by 10 degrees within minutes - This is exactly what i experienced yesterday. Was this a heat burst or Foehn affect perhaps? I have no idea. Thanks.

Pleasant day here. Fresher but still warm at 25 deg. No signs of any cloud building presently...presumably still to come..

No idea but it definitely happened here, the hot wind, at around the same time our temp got 37 on the Langdon bay weather station. But I think it was just a warm wind here, cause it was like it for a while. Made it very uncomfortable to walk outside. Even in the shade the wind made it feel hotter, and made your throat dry, and breathing felt hard.

No expert on this but i think it had something to do with the very warm airmass at 850 hp in that the motions of the wind and atmosphere as the front approached were enabling some of that air to be brought to lower levels and as a result it would have warmed up even further ( at the dry adiabatic rate?) , and you would have felt these pretty intense gusts of hot air. I noticed it as well, surreal. I stand to be corrected on this though by some more knowledgable posters....

Same here, It was very uncomfortable i had to come in the house, It was like being in an oven for 20 minutes outside with the wind being so hot, Not warm but hot.

Neither am i.. haha I know a little. But you may be right regarding the dry adiabatic rate. It was surreal. Thanks.

Folks who say it's too windy for storms need to remember that just because it's windy at lower levels doesn't mean it's windy higher up where the storms are building.

Definitely more chance of storms today than yesterday.

Usually when I see comments like this, I think "well we've earned it having had to suffer the heat and humidity"...certainly not this time! I had hoped there'd be some fairly widespread showers/storms, but apparently not 😢

I did come on here to comment that, despite the storm forecasts from @Nick F and @staplehurst, it does seem to be a little bit sluggish getting going today. BUT, having pulled my finger out and been a lot less lazy (well done, me 🤭) all models do not show any notable CAPE building until around 14:00 this afternoon, initially across the W/Midlands, then transferring S and E through the afternoon and night. Peak CAPE for London/Kent not arriving until late afternoon/evening.

I'm not sure I agree with these statements. Technically, you want it windy higher up because this is effectively what wind shear is. Even if it is windy as the surface, it has a negligible impact on storm development.

Personally, I wouldn't say there is more chance of storms today... if anything I'd say the opposite. But the important thing to note today, is the difference in storms. Those yesterday was elevated thunderstorms whereas today we're expecting a few surface-based thunderstorms.

We have not had any measurable rain in about 3 weeks either, had light rain yesterday for a brief period, i went out and stood in it for relief but it wasn't enough to wet the soil.  The heaviest thundary rain was in cornwall and north Devon.  I'd hazard a good guess and say around this part will come out as very very dry  for july, will be interested to see the met office anomaly charts the beginning of August for July.

It's been hot with a hazy sunshine all day today. Mostly low-level fluff about, but then occasionally get something a bit more meaty-looking. Shows there's some potential at least.

Even though skies have been going darker I hope the overcast clouds this morning won't ruin any chances
