My uncle, stepdad and step brother were on the tankers on that job in 1995, it was a massive undertaking, tachographs and driving hours were wavered and some big wages earned, as you say, the penny dropped and a massive investment in transfer pipelines was undertaken!

Yeah I had a mate who did the same, came off moving tankers of beer to moving water although at the time it probably had more value😂

Because of the changes to driving hours he said it was the best paid job he ever had and no issues with being stuck in traffic as they often had police escorts.

I can still remember seeing it on the news with the 1st lane on the westbound M62 closed while the tankers stopped to empty the water over Scammonden Dam wall before setting off for another load.

whether it worked who knows but it must have helped.

Yep anybody with a 'food' grade tanker was drafted in, dedicated lanes on the M62 to scammondem, it was quite an operation, drivers came from all over the country for the wages on offer!

The rating for this Summer is now hanging on the last half of August, historically not a reliable time of year.

If we can manage one more warm spell >25c after this hot spell and before the 31st, Summer 2022 will surely be a top 10 at least for SE England.

Nationally I don't think it'll go down as historic, the North and West have been closer to average.

The true belter needs the whole UK to have 'hottest Summer'. Just shows local vs national stats!

Agreed.. the further NW you have been the less impressive the summer has been.  I was in Scotland last week and saw rain for the 1st time in 5 weeks and in some areas it looks nowhere near as parched as down south.

I'd say, barring a very poor 2nd half to August it will go down as a top 10 for the south.  Probably a 'slightly' cooler version of 2003 is the best comparison in that the nw/se split has been evident.  I feel it is actually a typical la nina exit summer pattern, but something (not sure what) is shifting the pattern further north just a bit.. hence northern areas remain generally  under westerly winds.

One other thing about the hot sunny days this year I have noticed, is there has tended to either be an infill of cumulus in the afternoons, or large amounts of useless cirrus cloud drifting about.  Only the last few days, and maybe 1 or 2 others, have bucked this trend.  Many of the hottest summers have had more clearer days I'd say.

🙄hero cookie for the tough guy

Come, the consistency of warmth must mean people are acclimatising somewhat to the heat. Plus I’ve been out the country for 3weeks in the 7 missing the cooler interludes. Nothing about being tough

I’ve been in Aviemore in Scotland since Saturday. The first day was cool and cloudy, but the last few days have been glorious. Clear blue skies and temperatures up to about 25°c in the Highlands.

We were on our drive back down today and it was beautiful and sunny until we got to the south east coast of Scotland near North Berwick and on the coastal strip of NE England along the A1 where it was plagued with low cloud and haar. Once we got to our hotel stopover just north of Newcastle it was sunny again.

Back down tomorrow to the furnace and desert that is London town.

Just been chatting to a good mate whom owns a local farm @650 acres, all harvesting done! prob 3 weeks early but yields are good firstly on barley and then wheat which is 4 ton/acre straight to shed no drying required, bailing is being done through the night to gain a bit of moisture to aid weight/compression! He was well satisfied with this years harvest!

Off to the hebrides tomorrow where I've been told its been the worse summer in years. Essentially a front has straddled the islands giving rain low cloud and low temperatures. I'm kind of looking forward to wearing a jumper!

Probably the first classic August spell I can remember for here.  Looking like we'll potentially have 5 consecutive days of 30°C+.  Just day on day building of heat!  Chart of this week from my personal weather station.

Grape crops in the south are unsurprisingly going to awesome this year. Saw on the news last night there were very different responses from the vineyard owners saying let it continue verses the cattle farmers begging for rain. As usual just like on this forums not everyone can be pleased at the same time.

Very early days I know, but I don't have much hopes for this summer.

I can see August being the best month out of the three, but on the whole I imagine it will be a fairly bog standard summer with the odd very warm to hot day scattered around here and there, along with somewhat inadequate sunshine levels as well as perhaps an isolated thunderstorm or two. So kind of like last year's summer really.

Still, you never know!

Lol.

Some types of mental health medication may make it difficult for the body to regulate temperature.

It's notably cooler than this time yesterday, with a stronger NE'ly breeze. Hopefully it will only reach 28 or so.

31C again. What’s not to like. Been paddle boarding today, just having a bite to eat outside and going to tee off at 2pm. Awesome day.

What a nice illustration of day on day high pressure dominated summer spell.  Would get the opposite in a similar winter spell (if it ever happens!)

This must be one of the hottest, if not the hottest weekend that Premier League has been played- and perhaps professional football in general in England.

There are normally only two possible weekends really in August that could produce these sorts of temperatures during the season.

A couple of 33s around after 1pm. I reckon somewhere will get above 35c today. Can’t see a 37c though.

A similiar high in winter would produce sub freezing maxima.. or may be not.

Definitely!  Makes me wonder if this spell were to go on for 10+ days with the heat just building day on day.  We are already seeing pretty extreme values already!  I'm not sure what the limit would be to the temperatures, there is probably some radiative equilibrium we would reach soon.

And of course this season started a bit earlier than usual. This would have been the first rather than second Premier League weekend in most seasons, but the season got bumped to prevent a major tournament being played in even worse conditions than this.

In 2003-4 the Premier League season started on 16 August, the then-record temperatures came the weekend before. There were Football League matches that weekend; Millwall-Wigan on 9 August 2003 (when multiple London stations, including Greenwich not far from The Den, recorded 36C) may have been the hottest, and this will likely not quite be topped today. The Community Shield the next day would have been the undisputed record-holder, but that was the Wembley reconstruction era so it was played in Cardiff.

The Women's Euros took place last month of course, but there were no games on the 19th and the two games on the 18th were 8pm kickoffs in Rotherham and Manchester. Despite that, the former (recorded by UEFA as 35C) is still a contender for being the hottest professional football match ever played in England, at least at kickoff.
