January 2023 was generally milder than average for the Italian peninsula, due to the extremely warm first half of the month. There was some cold in the third decade, especially in the eastern regions.

First medicane of the 2023 season formed on 21 January over the Adriatic.

"Due to the favourable conditions, a disturbance started strengthening and transitioned into a tropical-cyclone-type of whirl , known in the Mediterranean as a medicane ((MEDIterranean hurriCANE)"

March starts quite cold and rainy in mainland Italy... Later we will see the final data for winter 2022/23 but it should have been the warmest fourth, according to the first data.

This very rainy phase continues in peninsular Italy, with lots of snow in the mountains. In recent days it has also snowed heavily in the Algerian Atlas and yesterday in the mountains of Bosnia. From Tuesday a rise in temperatures is expected in peninsular Italy, due to the sirocco winds.

After a couple of cold days (mostly in the southern Balkans), next week there will be a clear increase in temperatures, especially in southern Italy and Sicily, with temperatures widely above 22/23 C

It's a very variable March so far, initially cold, then rather hot but in the end the cold could return in the southern Balkans and most likely also in a part of Italy

It is a cold Easter in mainland Italy but it is not so unusual, in a strongly peninsular climate like the Italian one, which has "late" seasons and depends a lot on what is happening in the southern Balkans. Yesterday the snow level in Campania dropped to 600 meters, as at Easter 1995, 2001 and 2008. Happy Easter to all of you and your families!

I actually spent the week after Easter in Italy on a school trip during 1985, and the weather was similarly changeable. (This was in the Naples area).

Most days were fine with temps hovering around 20, but there were two decidedly cool, wet days (Fri 12th and Mon 15th), the former involving an aborted attempt to reach the summit of Vesuvius from the road (which we did manage the following Sunday, I think) and the latter involving a trip to Capri in weather almost identical to what we are experiencing here in the UK today.

I recall an electronic temperature display of just 12C on Friday 12th.

Spring seems to be a much more "equal" season weatherwise across Europe, in the sense that most parts of the continent can be warm and dry, or cold and wet. This is in contrast to winter, summer and autumn, in which northwestern Europe, including the UK, typically gets much worse weather than the rest of the continent. The relative lack of Atlantic activity and tendency for continental lows to form could doubtless explain this.

Yesterday the cold phase ended in mainland Italy and from today the temperatures will rise again, widely exceeding 20 C already on Thursday 13

I spend quite a bit of time in Greece nowadays (which would probably qualify as southern Balkans, and is not so far from Italy) and it does seem to be the way that when it's unusually warm and sunny here, it's relatively cool and changeable there, and the converse. In particular, August 2022 was unusually thundery with rainfall well above average and temps somewhat below - though still, compared to the UK, sunny and warm!

So as the weather deteriorates (for a few days) in the UK it comes as no surprise to hear it's getting better in your part of the world!

The violent heat wave that is expected for the next few days in Spain and Portugal will also affect Italy but in a more attenuated way. April 2023 is turning out to be cool in mainland Italy, it will probably be the coolest since 2001 or 1997, depending on the area and it is the first month cooler than the average of 81/10 since March 2022

Few news in the next few days in peninsular Italy, temperatures will be slightly above average, especially in the Tyrrhenian regions but it will only be hot in Sardinia and there will be the possibility of abundant rainfall, especially in inland areas.

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
