29 in the "home office" and with a badly regulated and not to standard thermometer in the garden that is about to be not in the shade, it was sat at just over 34.

The sky where I am is blue, still, but I can see the high cloud others have talked about to my south (hants/surrey border) and southwest/west. So some is on its way. Will see what, if any, effect it has!

The low humidity also means it doesn't feel that uncomfortable at the moment. But wow it is warm out there.

There's our 42 year July record gone. 😀

Currently 31.9C.

Next highest temperature is the big one, 34.0C set in August 1990.

Safe to say 40 degrees not going to be breached today, not sure 100% sure record is going to go  either.

Everyone on here seems to think it's a done deal but look back over last couple of pages the rate of increase is slowing considerably.

Massive increase this morning but now nowhere has raised more than 0.8 degrees In last hour

we only got another  4 hours of rises. So  only another 3 degrees max on top of what they are now, so going to be close.

Doesn't make sense  - the upper air temps are increasing.

Starting to think the same. Think we're going to struggle to beat the record today. Highly likely tomorrow though.

Yep, temperatures were slightly too high on the models compared to actuals.

I seem to be in a cool spot, only 31c in my garden. Heat is nice and dry, just like being on Holiday.

Yeah the uppers are increasing but look at the rate temperature increasing its slowing. The models won't have good handle on max temperatures for UK as lack of historical data.

I would think that air temperature is not linear to uppers for UK even if no cloud as as the land temperature increases we will begin to generate as stronger sea breeze pushing temps down well inland

Does seem some big temperature variations between locations.

Charlwood is about 20 miles from me, they were at 34c at noon and we were only hitting 29c here.

Heathrow has completely stalled below 36C now, so if we're going to get the record it'll be elsewhere.

Looks like mid level cloud moved into the nearby area.

I'm sure somewhere like Cambridge will be reaching a 37-38c mind you.

31.5c here now but looks like showers may scupper my chances of getting any higher. A few of those developing I see.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
