I remember this being played on Atlantic 252 a lot during July 94!  All these great songs from the past and what do we have these days?! 😢

Drake, Stormzy, and lots of urban or edm music with auto tune lol.

Masterpiece of a song, despairingly sad though as it was written about his experience with his dying dad. His dad was that close to death, even the drugs had stopped working 😞

His depressive sense of inevitability of his dad’s death summed up with the lyric ‘like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown’

Those lyrics are rough. And this was around the time of Diana’s death.

Late August early September 1997.

BBC Essex's Ray Clark always reckons this encapsulates the move from late summer into early autumn.

My uncle had that album, and we used to play it quite often. Probably my earliest introduction to electronic music, along with Gary Numan.

Yes but was released end Jan 82.

I suppose it’s just word association for me. Isn’t it about drugs anyway??? But I wouldn’t have known that when I was 10!!

songs never remind me of a time of the year..its always people or places..i will hear a song and know what year it is from but can never really place it into the time of year it was in the charts..unless it coincides with an event like BDAY Xmas or my Wedding etc

This song late summer 92. Not particularly a late summer vibe type song but always reminds me of late summer and of autumn 92. Can't believe its 30 yrs old  already. Time flies.....

This summer by Squeeze released in late Aug 1995 has a last of the summer vibe to it, very wistful, even though its about summer, wonder if I would associate it with an early summer feel had it been released earlier in the summer. Prior to about mid 00's when downloads took over etc.. the music industry would often release big holiday dance tunes and party tunes in early September, and we would have to wait until late September before the biggest selling artists returned to the charts often with new material in time for christmas. Hence when you look at the charts in the 80s and 90s, there was an abundance of big dance hits hitting the upper Top 10 late August - mid Sept, examples include Culture Beat - mr Vain, Saturday Night - Whigfield..

Is there anything more sadly beautiful than this if you love the summer?

An old friend back in the early 80s used to take delight in singing the first line from any time after mid August, normally when we were sitting outside a Bristol pub drinking and revelling in the outdoors.  In hindsight  I'm surprised we never went further than telling him to f off!

I remember Stardust in August 1998, and has that summer feel to it, but also the late summer autumn is coming feeling.

From the same summer, maybe slightly earlier, but still played in August 98.

Not related to the autumn time of year that we’re discussing but the 90s really was great for music wasn’t it.

One song guaranteed to get me dancing is ‘What is love’ by Haddaway from 1993. One of the best dance songs of the 90s IMO. Love how the synth strings are brought out more in the 12” version 😉
