Should see some pixels in Scandinavia by next Tuesday hopefully.

Looking promising for the next couple of days...

Snow moving quickly westward into eastern Europe, and southwards through Scandy  on today's charts.

Cold air is actually very close to our east currently, but looks to remain that way unfortunately

Good to see it arriving at least, many saying no cold air about, but it is a good cold pool for mid Nov. Good to see snow advancing into central Europe.

It is good to see the cold in place (and shows how it can cool rapidly over the continent) so if things align correctly, the UK will be in the firing line!!

Yep, snow cover extended westwards considerably yesterday, into N Germany and even into Northern Holland (just to the east of Amsterdam).

Thought at one stage it might even reach the North Sea.!!!!

Friday Could contain: Plot, Chart, Map, Atlas, Person, Outdoors, Nature, Rainforest, Vegetation, Tree      Saturday      Could contain: Plot, Chart, Map, Atlas, Person, Outdoors, Nature, Rainforest, Vegetation, Tree

Also,    one mustn't forget the snowfalls and cold in the USA.

Back later with more details of snow and ice changes from Masie, following on from a couple of quiet days.

A 'quick' update on Rutgers snow cover-...  (looking good for the current date).

Thanks for the update. Lets hope all that snow cover further east holds a long term cold block. Maybe the next attempt to push westwards may see some snow reach the North Sea !

Well todays data looks good for snow coverage further extensions, but sea ice extent looks to have stalled.

Masie ice extent has shown hardly any gains over the last 3 days with changes  of (+40K),(-28K) and (+29K).

The main slow down is seen in the Russian waters as the newly created ice gets pushed back by a wind reversal which has occured over the weekend.

Despite this the average temperatures over the Arctic have been falling steadily and are now down below 250Kelvin - about -23C. Still colder than last year, although 2021 is now speeding ahead by about (+200K) with regard to ice extent.,

Small falls have been seen in Bering and Chukchi  and to a lesser extent in Beaufort, whilst Greenland has shown real falls..

Baffin Bay continues to ice over, and next door sees Hudson now with ice on both the east and west shores.

No real sign yet that the vortex is set to dominate the Arctic any time soon.

Latest model runs are showing that high pressure is the more likely to dominate. and the outcome will depend upon exactly where and how it sets up, as it could have a variety of different effects.

 More popcorn required....

US smashing 100s and 100s of cold temp records widely, with snow totals also being smashed.  Cold pool in Siberia needs to be watched as snow and cold advances west.  HP belt across mid latitudes look to be favourably setting up for cold to be a forceful feature this winter going forward.

Notice that it is due to start the season on friday 25th Nov..

Temps currently -8C, with a few cms of snow cover,   but will rise to around -2C by the weekend with a little more snow before then.

You will have to go up the mountain for the best snow.

If latest models are correct , no ice formation in Barents or Svalbard area in the foreseeable,  unusually mild

Given all the recent snowfall in the Great Lakes area I checked the mid-day temps of some US cities, for Sunday... Chicago: -3C; New York: +3C, and Toronto: -2C. So, nothing exceptional in terms of temperature... But, nonetheless, optimal conditions for massive snowfall?🤔

Who would have guessed it?........

It just so happens that you have selected the one area in the whole of the Arctic with above normal temperatures.

DMI shows that the average temperature is almost exactly the same as the coldest average period in its history 1949 -2002.

Known as cherry plucking!

IF you are interested and would like to see a proper temperature chart containing the whole of the Arctic then use the link below used for recording  actual temperatures around the Arctic...

(Keep hitting the red and yellow dots).

10-day weather forecasts: Khatanga, Russia (allmetsat.com)

https://en.allmetsat.com/weather-forecast/arctic.php?city=khatanga-ru

I am sure it will gladden your heart to see that many of the central Russian stations are showing a minimum of below -40C, and even one of a maximum of -41C.

That is the coldest for quite a few years that we have seen over there at this time of year.

Thanks MIA ,yes that was my point. As you say our sector of the Arctic is the only one that has above normal temps,  typical, will need a sustained colder spell in Barents to get sea ice growing.

Thanks again
