Big cold plunge across the far east. Currently the city of Mohe in the far north of China is in a brutal cold spell. Very cold weather is not unheard of here, it happens every winter but temps well below -40C are not an every year occurance or even once every decade so it's a bit unusual, -30s are though every Winter. This cold plunges much further south in a few days even places like Shanghai will feel it's effects.

-15C uppers there and look how far south Shanghai is....31 degrees N which is like the same as central-southern Morocco. Temps will struggle to get much above freezing. Last time we had -15C uppers was the BTFE in 2018. Notice Manila in the Philippines as well, you can see the effects of the cold even here on the 2nd ensembles. There's a little dip even there close to the Equator.

Out and about in the Cartmel Peninsula today, and unusually odd to see more snow there than here, indeed in sheltered spots it lay crisp. Ground temps must be quite cold at present, and the sun is still very weak. A question for anyone is sand a poor insulator? Yesterday the sandy estuary at Arnside was covered with snow and again this morning... it must be, as the south and west facing hillsides of the fells up to about 600m have been stripped of snow.. assume grass and earth heats up much more quickly than sand?

Its all an odd sight, seeing normally mildest parts of the county in snow, and the higher hillsides green.

Back to the here and now, another air frost on the cards, likely to be much colder than last night thanks to light winds and clear skies. The weekend now set to stay firmly cold, tomorrow sunny, Sunday looking raw indeed. Turning into a good cold spell not on a par with earlier in December, but decent all the same.

Sand is for some reason very good for retaining snow cover and even effects air temperature above it. Not sure of the precise scientific reasons for it though.

Benson sits on sandy soil and from what I hear is part of the reason the airfield records very low temps. It does sit in a frost pocket though but the soil type is another big factor. Concrete and tarmac are of course the warmest surfaces, then you have mud given it's black attracts sunlight so in theory warms up quick but when completely covered in snow it may not with it being a natural organic material, with just frost though it will warm up quicker. Then you have grass and sand which are of course the coldest surfaces.

Thanks for the reply, yes another frost prone spot is Santon Downham and I think this is because it occupies a sandy hollow. I think it is due to the ground being dry.

If you take a close look at local landscapes, frost and snow tends to hold on in certain places more than others, obviously aspects that are east, north facing more so than south and west. There is a field that I know that keeps the frost whilst all around is green, simply because it is in a dip protected by rocky ground - east facing. You get to know where the icy places will be. You can tell north and east facing gardens to south and west, the former will retain there snow, the latter stay all green. Build your snowman on the north of east garden if want to hang around. Walking the fells you learn to walk with the 'aspect' - if you want less snow and ice stick to the west and south facing sides, usually a different world to the north and east facing aspects.

Currently 2.1C, likely a front tonight, maybe down to 0C tonight.

Gradually warming up past the weekend but only to average for the time of year.

Starting to wonder whether the cold will really relinquish England & Wales as the High wobbles around, before eventually pulling in much colder weather from the North East as we enter Feb.

-3.8C was the low last night. Really exceptional to keep hitting these low minimums for my location.

Was hoping that the high pressure would bring some sunshine with it, but looks like a lot of cloud trapped in it.

Frosty start - very icy overnight - but bonus is the sun is out giving relief for any wildlife basking in it's rays.  Managed first cycle ride of the year yesterday after a very wet spell...so high pressure might be boring weather wise but at least it gives you opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoors a bit more.

Beautiful day in the marginals. Bright and very little cloud. -3 last night, just 0.7 now. Snow cover generally holding on. Thaw started on roofs about midday but already slowing down. Interesting to see if approaching fronts make much impact.

Now -0.5  could be a cold one if clouds stay away

Temperature only reached 0.4C today, turned misty after a sunny start. Temperature dropping away now and already down to -1.1C.
