Crikey that’s more than what they got in November when they received 81 inches!!Incredible if it comes off-that is 7.5 feet in old money!!Staggering.

That's along with 70 mph winds, will cause drifts as big as houses! I think most damage will be done to the Eastern shores of the lakes, where the water levels could be 10-18 feet above normal, turning to ice , coating everything in a sheet of iron hard water.

Gee whizz. Climate change is really messing about with our weather! 🥶

Dangerously low temperatures are a serious threat, even in major cities around the US and Canada.

Yes Ed, still looks to me that we are better off with a spot of globul warming, rather than this dangerous stuff.

Saw a forecast on a De Moines TV station highlighting the rarity of the storm. On average they would expect to have a 0F temp for 2-4 hrs a year. In the last ten years they have had 27hrs. By the end of today they will have had 24 hrs with plenty more to come. As the front cleared temps fell from 6C to - 16C in 30 mins

Day after tomorrow stuff

@Nick F has written a blog looking at the storm:

A look at a powerful winter storm bringing extremely cold arctic air to large parts of the USA at the moment, breaking a few records, with blizzard conditions in the northeast and dangerous live-threatening cold and wind...

Brutal conditions over there, massive coastal flooding on the East coast and eastern lake ends.

After the short sharp freeze potentially near-record breaking warmth to follow for some.

One of the modern intense cold snaps followed by notable warmth. Not like the 70's at all.

Interesting the pocket of average to slightly cooler than average conditions in the southeast. I’m assuming that’s a small pocket of temperature inversion due to high pressure.

The ‘70s did flip from exceptional cold to mild sometimes too. January 1976 was generally very cold but then was followed by exceptional cold in February 1976. After the brutally cold winter of 1976/1977 actually March 1977 was exceptionally warm in places. February 1981 was also another flip to record warm in places after a generally chilly January. As weather patterns go though definitely very interesting and fascinating to watch from afar. My closest friend actually is long distance and lives in the suburbs outside Chicago some way. His pipes have frozen! I imagine they greatly anticipate this warmth as will many others!

New York City Central Park (NYC) set an all-time record for largest range of max and min (max 58, min 8 F) which broke a record set March 28, 1921 (82, 34 for 48 F deg). The pattern is changing and where I live we will finally get out of the deep freeze we have been in for most of the past two months. Expecting a temperature slightly above freezing by Christmas Day but will need to get through one more snowfall 24th-25th from the current reading of -11 C which is still an improvement over yesterday's -25.

Well Hell really has frozen over.....

"Temperatures in Elk Park, Montana, dropped to -50F (-45C), while the town of Hell, Michigan, has frozen over.

It was 1F (-17C) in the snow-covered community on Friday night. Emily, a bartender at Smitty's Hell Saloon, told the BBC: "It's pretty cold here, but we're having a hell of a time." "
