When will we see the first thunderstorms of 2023?

I’m secretly hopeful this coming summer will usher in a few stormy periods.

Last summer wasn’t too bad, but the storms came in May and late August and early September.

I think June will be the month for storms this year.

Despite long mild wet periods this winter, we haven't really seen any off-season winter storms (from Pm or rPm air travelling over warm seas) yet - and given that the first half of winter has more of these due to warmer SSTs, I suspect we may well not now.

My guess for this area will be some thundery showers in a N or NW airmass in April at some point, but the first proper outbreak sometime in May: my gut feeling for May is warm but somewhat thundery with a lot of easterlies - mostly because last year was unseasonably westerly!

Had one here in May last year which was quite early but had actually happened a few times here in recent years and is by no means the earliest I’ve seen. We always seems to get thunderstorms near my birthday in late July but I’m going to say some time around late May for the first thunderstorm.

Earliest in the year that I’ve had a storm was late March 2016, on Easter.
But I’d guess first good storms of this year starting mid May onwards.

January 1st..

New years came in with a thundery shower...thats a first time thats happened..

Friday 26th May, Saturday 24th June and Friday 18th August.

The May one will be an overnight storm. The June one will move in during the late evening(similar to June 1994 and August 1987), and the August one will be a daytime storm with daytime darkness, and more storms during the night.

Lets see if that happens lol.
