Your ideal weather year - month by month in history

Since it's quiet with everyone holding their breath for what the SSW will do and with the charts looking tedious for now, thought I'd pose this question. Don't know if a thread like this has been done before. Probably has but, as per thread title, what is your ideal weather year by previous months based on years gone by?

Mine (in my lifetime, not that I can recall the 70s very well)

Jan - 1979, 82, 85 or 87. 2010 too

Feb - 1979 or 1985

March - Don't care

April - 2020 (preferably not with the pandemic to accompany it)

May - 2020

June - 1996 - I think this month was quite thundery

July - 1983, 1984, 1990, 1994, 1995, 2003, 2006, 2018, 2019

August - 1983, 1990, 1995, 2003 or 2022

September - don't really mind nor can I remember too much but let's say 1986 or 1993

October - Don't care/can't remember

November - 1980 or 1985

December - 1981, 2009, 2010

The caveat with the summer months is I can't recall when, exactly, warm/hot but thundery versions of those months occurred but, if I could, I'd throw those in too

Moderators - please move if you think that's appropriate

Yes there have been similiar thread to this posted, if you look back in the archives probably find the last one, indeed I recall one not long ago..

Thinking of February - 1996 hands down as it delivered the largest snowfall I've ever witnessed, was generally a cold month, though not consistently, but definately a proper winter month. My memories pre 1985-86 are very hazy, and everyone will have different opinion based on personal weather preferences, what they experienced depending on location and memory I guess.

I agree with your Julys, but I would replace 2019 with July 2013. 2019 was a very muggy July and wasn’t that great despite the very hot week in the middle.

Jan - 2022. Mild & dry, good for outdoor activity. Important for getting sufficient exercise at this time of year

Feb - 2019. Heatwave - an even better version of Jan 2022

Mar - 1973. Very anticyclonic - some other years are similar

Apr - 1989. Unusually large number of snow days, which are a novelty if the winter has been mild as in 1989

May - 1980. Bone dry until the last day. So dry there were some fires on the moors

June - 2021. Summer 2021 as a whole is one of my favourites. Really good in the North West for locations further North than Manchester

July - 1982. Anticyclones located in the perfect positions for good weather here in the Northwest. Much poorer further South. Second half of Aug 2021 was similar

Aug - 1997

Sept - 1986. Exceptionally cold and also very dry. Day after day of proper clear blue sky

Oct - 2016. A rare example in these parts of a good October for the outdoors.

Nov - 1988. Dry, but included a little snow

Dec - 1968. Bit of everything

January 1980 - dry cold and sunny.

February 1991, 2009. Both had cold snowy spells and decent falls. Even February 1994 is a decent second option despite less snowfall.

March 2003 - lovely start to spring and decent warmth after the winter.

April 2020- clear blue skies with a mix of warm and cool days, plus cool at night and low humidity.

May 2018/2020- long warm sunny spells and unbroken sunshine.

June 2009 and 2010. Clear warm and sometimes hot sunny spells.

July 1975/76/83/84/89/90/94/95/2003/2006

2013, 2018, 2022.

August 1983,84,89,90,95,2013,2022.

September 2020

October 1995

November 1979

December 1981,95, 2009, 2010, or even 2022 for the sunshine and frost levels.

Wasn’t May 1980 cloudy? Or was it similar to spring 2020 with weeks of sunshine?

The best months in NW England for outdoor exercise, particularly in areas further North than Manchester, are often when the winds are from the NE quarter. Such months can often be dull, cold, or even thundery in other parts of England. If you ever want to visit the Lake District, for example, if the models show this type of pattern developing then that is likely to be a good time to visit.

Interesting choice, any reason for this?

Very split month that for the British Isles, warm and sunny to the SE, dull and wet for north and west.

The first half of the month wasn't bad here. The first half  overall of that  summer wasn't bad. Second half of that July wasn't great but I didn't mind. Don't like Julys being too warm overall.

I've probably given a similar answer in previous threads but I'd say something like:

January 1985

February 1986

March 1995

April 1995

May 1992

June 1992

July 2006

August 1995

September 1997

October 1995

November 1985 (though sadly I have only vague memories of it, for some reason, but this is based on the MWR)

December 1981

January 2010 (cold & snowy with the odd less cold interlude)

February 2018 (cold start, average middle before a BTFE to round off the wintet)

March 2012 (frosty start and a warm end)

April 2020 (beautiful)

May 2018

(beautiful with a humid thundery end)

June 2017 (good heat spikes)

July 2006 (consistently warm)

August 2022 (hot days and cool nights)

September 2016 (extension of summer before a drop late month)

October 2016 (dry and still giving really good autumn colours)

November 2005 (frosty with a dusting end of month)

December 2010 (the Holy grail for Winter coldies!)
