Gowon   We are in this mess because we WASTE too much.  Over consumption is a product of too much waste, not enough self-discipline and, historically at least, a total disregard for the planet and all the other life which inhabits it even though all life should enjoy exactly the same right to survival.  Oh, and also we have just been far too successful at breeding.  I am convinced that nature will find a way to rebalance the global ecosystem even if it means a couple of million years of global heat and high sea levels.  It’s happened before.

Sky Full Humans didn't exist when said global rebalances occurred ..humans are far to intelligent and innovative not to be able to eventually control nature to our own advantage and outwit global warming etc ..destiny points the way there

cheeky_monkey    That might well prove to be the case, but only with a substantial reduction in the human population of the planet.  No amount of science and innovation will provide for even 8 billion apes all trying to achieve the same idle and selfish lifestyle and all living into their 80s, let alone 9 or 10 billion (by 2100?).  If only we could have a window into the future to see what the world is like in 500 years - I wonder what we would see…….

Sky Full population collapse is on the way and has already started ..world population will peak around 2050 then decline slowly towards the end of the century then really start to accelerate thereafter

cheeky_monkey Totally agree. UN has total population at 2100 between 11.2 and 9 Billion personally I think it will be around the 9. Projection is 9.8 by 2050.

We see 0 to 14 year old peaking around now and 14 to 24 year olds peaking around 2030 then both age groups in slow decline. Total world fertility is projected to fall below 2 per female around 2060.

We see war taking its toll on young men. Prosperity is making females to put off child bearing. All it would take for a major collapse in world population is a pandemic that really affects the elderly (whoops we just had one)

The demand for active workforces will in my opinion drive conflicts over the next decades. Forget Climate Change the true danger is population collapse.

jonboy  Yup most are sleeping on the declining birth rates which I don't want to bring to this point, but economically is a disaster global economies will face.

Those born after 2000 have grown up with war, recessions, political instability, financial inequality, changing climate oh and a global pandemic. I know many will ask me to break the violin out, but that isn't going to inspire that generation to breed if it's already a challenge to keep their own heads above water.

I agree with your post that population decline will be a global scale tipper.

now that the US has pulled out of the Paris agreement ..it makes the drive for Net Zero in the UK even less relevant need i say pointless..this means that China India and the USA now sit outside of the agreement ..those countries alone make up more than 50% of global emissions

Sky Full Evening SF, regarding the wastage: there's a documentary on Netflix all about how much we waste called Buy Now, I think it's well worth watching. It exposes the hidden tactics and covert strategies used by the worlds top brands to keep all of us locked in an endless cycle of buying, no matter the cost.

I think everyone should watch it.

Ironically, one has to add to Netflix's profits by buying said documentary.  It should be streamed free for everyone.
