Your worst weather year - using the worst months in history

I have seen many topics asking about your favourite weather months and what your ideal year would be like. But I think it'd make a change to comment what your worst year would be like using months that you personally detested.

I suppose for me it would be something like:

January - 2017 (just boring with constant anticyclonic gloom)

February - 2020 (far too wet, dull and mild. A very poor winter month)

March - 2013 (as much as I like cold weather in winter, I don't want it to drag on after mid March)

April - 2012 (cool, wet and dull)

May - 2021 (cool and wet up until the last few days)

June - 2016 (was going to mention 2012, but at least that did provide us with a decent thunderstorm at the end)

July - 2007 (very wet and dull)

August - 2008 (the worst August in my lifetime)

September - Not sure

October - 2019 (very wet and dull)

November - Not sure

December - 2015 (I don't remember anything wintry about it)

The summer of 2007 was one of the best ever IMO. Cool and very wet with several instances of dynamic torrential rainfall associated with slow moving LP systems.

August of that year provided a bit of drier weather with very tolerable temperatures. It also produced one of the best localised diurnal thunderstorms I've ever witnessed. Overhead lightning, torrential hail etc which turned the streets into rivers.

Great summer.

Not that many months stand out for me, garbage-wise, but a few do. February 1986; April 2012; June 2012; July 1970; there are too many Augusts to count, and December 1988.

April 1986 was horribly cold and wet.

January - 2020, absolute borefest

February - 2022, wet and miserable (storm was memorable though)

March - 2020,  wasn’t sure of this but apart from the end I remember the weather was as depressing as the news

April - 2012, Snow made it interesting but like warmth at this time of year not wet and cold

May - 2013, was so sick of it being cold by this point, even if the month on its own wasn’t that bad. 2021 similar but a memorable thunderstorm saves that.

June - 2012, washout, low pressure every weekend

July - 2008,, dull wet and cool

August - 2008, carried on from July

September - 2012, again on its own not the worst but after such a wet summer the last thing we needed was this

October - 2020, wet and miserable

November - 2015,  way too mild and unsettled

December - 2016, worse than 2015 because it wasn’t as interesting but still wet and mild (2018 a close second)

Should first mention that my nomination for worst year - 1985, featuring a particularly bad summer - doesn't quite make the list for any individual month.

Most boring year - 2002 - also doesn't feature for individual months.

Jan 2021

Feb 1972

Mar 1986

Apr 1994  Had a vile first week - unusual for a month which is sometimes the best month of the year here in NW England

May 1996  Coldest of my lifetime, but a good summer followed

June 1998

July 1988  Wettest on record

Aug 2008  Exceptionally dull

Sept 1976

Oct 2000  Floods

Nov 2022  Numerous others just as bad

Dec 2020

Jokes aside regarding my last message.

January 2020 - borefest

February 1996 - cold dull borefest

March - 2002 and 2004. Boring

April - 2012 and 2001 cold wet and dull.

May - 2012, 13 and 21. All horrible and dull cold months. 21 was warm at the end.

2016 was also a terrible May.

June - 2016 boring dull and humid. The overnight storms were the only memorable thing.

July and August - far too many to mention since 2007. 2007 was especially bad, as well as 2008.

August - 1986, 92, 93 and 2010, also 2011 was vile.

September - 2013 dull and cool, 1994 also dull and cool. Both followed by mild winters.

october - can’t remember.

November - can’t remember

December - 2015

2002 and 2011 were not very interesting years weatherwise, none of the months that year linger in the memory or stand out, so overall those years worst weather.

Individual months, for December, 2015 hands down, worst month overall of any I've experienced, mildest by far on record and wettest month on record as well. Shocking!

Warm April and thunderstorm on Easter Saturday, during that hot spell with temps of 27-29c.

The poor summer was notable after a relatively warm and pleasant April and early May.

For my neck of the woods, the weather event during 2011 that stands out the most for me is that very warm/hot spell at the end of Sept and into early Oct. I am not a fan of warm autumns, but that spell was an exceptional event and one I will always remember.

As for 2002, can't say that I remember anything about it. But I wasn't interested in the weather in those days.

These would be pretty much my months for the worst weather year combination as well.

Perhaps April 2021 would not be my cup of tea for how cold it was.

December 2018 a rather snowless month iirc.

My lifetime for this one as I do not know historic poor months too well apart from the obvious likes of August 1912.

January 2013

February 2017

March 2013

April 2017

May 2015

June 2002

July 2020

August 2020

September 2016

October 2017

November 2019

December 2018

A common theme: All very cloudy! And in the case of September 2016, far too warm for the time of year. June 2002 I don't have memories, I was just over 1 and a half years old but statistically it was quite poor and I would have hated it I'd say. June 2019 at least had an ok second half, fine ending and June 2012 I liked the novelty of it being so wet.

2011 was the year it was mild/warm every month except where you'd expect it.. summer.

Yes, the core warm months May-August were devoid of much warmth, the April was exceptional, akin to 2007, but too early for warmth to enjoy.. the late Sept heat spike was silly as well.

In the UK (mainly Liverpool):

January 2007

February 2011

March 2014

April 2012

May 2015

June 2012

July 2012

August 2014

September 2012

October 2009

November 2015

December 2015

For some of these months (March, April, September, October) I don't feel very strongly one way or the other because I don't usually expect much of them. The winter and summer months however should hang their heads in shame. 😔

This February will slot in if it carries on being as boring as it has been

Yes this February joining the ranks of 1992, 2002, 2008, 2014, 2020 and 2022 on the mild stakes. Something a bit more interesting on the cards next week, but the first two thirds will go down as one of the most uninteresting periods ever winter weatherwise, watching paint dry recently.
