What about the freak snow event on the 28th/29th April 2016. That brought a significant dumping here unsure how widespread that was though however.

I think the terrible summer of 1980 is quite forgotten but imo actually sounds worst then a lot of the more famous bad summers. the period from the around the 21st June to 21st July was especially with one of the coldest July days on record on the 1st and I believe it’s one of the only Julys ever where London had an average maximum of under 20.

Harry233 yes I remember this vividly. My birthday weekend. Woke up to about 3-5cm. Latest snowfall I've seen in my lifetime by some distance.

Talking of late April snow, I recall reports of lying snow in north-east Scotland, including the Aberdeen area, towards the end of April 2015 - probably the 25th/26th judging by the synoptic charts. For recent times an unusual event even for north-east Scotland. Unlike in 2016 and 2017 the late April snow of 2015 was mainly limited to north-east Scotland but England had some widespread overnight frosts afterwards.

Not much seems to be mentioned about the 31st of August 2005 thunderstorms that broke out in southwestern areas on the late afternoon and evening.

I was 9 years old at the time living in southwest England and its still one of the most notable thunderstorms i can remember. I will never forget the incredibly dark and unstable mid-level clouds that were around before i could see the first distant orange colored cloud to ground lightning strikes in the distance.

wimblettben Yes I remember that afternoon/evening very well. In fact that late August and early September period was thundery overall but I think is often forgotten. I think the midlands did well on the 04th/05th, the SE on the 09th and we had a monumental rain event on the 10th with thunder locally.

wimblettben They broke out in north-east England as well, I remember getting a big thunderstorm in Leeds that evening and the Tyne and Wear area also got a big one.

Mentioned this one before but what about severe thunderstorms in the south-east on the 28th of June, 2011?

I remember this vividly! The 27th was the only really hot day of the summer with temperatures of 33C. I remember forecasts showing severe thunderstorms forecast for that night but it turned out to be a complete bust. I was really scared of storms and was in quite a lot of anxiety the whole day. The evening came and clear conditions remained and then there was nothing, at least in my area, overnight leading me to think we'd escaped the worst. However the 28th saw three successive thunderstorms roll overhead, and some of these were news worthy as I remember on BBC SE news there being reports of a house being struck with lightning.

When the storms cleared the evening was exceptionally cool with lots of grey low clouds, indicative of very cool uppers moving in behind.

The same day a year later would get one of the most impressive thundery outbreaks of all time in the north but exactly a year before was quite the spectable down year.

November 2010 in London started with an 18.5c/15.1c day on the 4th, surely the warmest November mean temp and the warmest November night on record?

It ended with highs of 1.5c, 1.6c, 1.5c from the 27th-29th, the 3 coldest November highs on record at Heathrow.

Nobody seems to ever mention it.

A forgotten early season potent gale

5th September 1967

My “in-law” so to speak grew up in the Bahamas before coming to the UK in September 1967 and apparently the weather was an extreme shock. I can see why!

The snowy winter of 1967/1968 was even more of a shock to her.

Most people remember February 2019 for the exceptional warmth and 20C being reached for the first time ever in winter.  I feel people forget the first few days though were actually very wintry.  We had a snowfall locally which was equal to that of January 2010 (about 8 to 9 inches).  I know not everywhere had the deep snow, but all must have had the brief severe cold.

I remember this, morning of the 24th January 1990.  A trough tracked across parts of northern England, Wales and the Midlands bringing their first snowfall of that winter parts.  I recall waking up and seeing snow falling and a snow cover.  It was a bit unexpected. Forecast was for snow over the hills and nothing to suggest a more organized banding of the showers.

This was totally eclipse by what followed the next day.
