I think a lot of people's feelings about the next few weeks will be affected simply by the time of week. For example, the models look fairly keen on a midweek Irish Sea storm. Not very pleasant to be out in of course, but if the following weekend is at least okay I suspect most people will be less bothered (and will remember the period less negatively) than if roles were reversed with midweek decent and the weekend a washout.

Still a fair bit of warmth in the sun at the moment. It's only 14.2 °C as I write, but with the sun out I was quite comfortable going for a walk in shirtsleeves just now.

14.2 for this time of day in September sounds seriously cold to me, I'd definitely be wearing much more than that at this time of year!

Despite an air pressure of only 995mb, it is actually quite a pleasant morning with the sky being mostly sunny along with a very gentle breeze. Just shows that low pressure doesn't necessarily equate to being unsettled, just like high pressure doesn't always equate to being settled and sunny.

Edit: Looks like I have spoken too soon as it's clouding over now.

Hasn't unclouded here yet, to close to that front from yesterday I think.

16C is a bit chilly for September though? More typical for early October.

I'd say the stereotypical southern England September day is about 20C, with benign weather, some sun, some cloud.

If the outlook was that I'd be happy. No need for heatwaves, just some settled weather!

I doubt it, the average here is only 19 for September.

I think like most months it's been drifting upwards though. ISTR 19 was the old 1961-90 average for a typical southern England location, most months have gone up by about a degree by then, hence my guesstimate of 20.

But whatever, 1C above average is more normal than 3C below!

It 19 in the new average, July and August are 20, how we managed an average in July. Do er average temp is quite low, probably proximity to the north sea.

It is cold for Sept, in my area anyway. Bear in mind that Sept on average is around as warm as June, for daytime maxes throughout the majority of the month.

How can it be as warm as June when the sun is lower?

Was sunny earlier now wet again with persistent light rain, 4mm today, nearly 70mm since last Tuesday.

Could be the wettest second half of September in quite a long time here, even wetter than 2019, depending on where the NW / SE split sets up next week.

I do wonder if that could mean that later in the autumn it becomes a bit drier, as if it isn't then it will end up being an extremely wet season. Instances of flooding will continue to likely go up, (already began in London and Wales yesterday, Devon on Sunday) if we don't see a relaxation of the current pattern.

Oh I'm not saying it feels as warm, and UV is obviously significantly lower. I just mean in terms of average max daytime temps. They're pretty similar for June and September respectively, for most of the country.

But for sure, this just hits home the importance of sun strength. I mean, you can get 21c days in early October, but they're nothing like how a 21c day in early June feels (for those who think weather 'feeling' or 'perception' doesn't matter).

20c in late Sept or early Oct and 20c in June are not the same, regardless of them being the same on a graph.

Seriously broody scenes out there! This is what I mean about Autumn in Britain. It so often just ends up bringing this sort of grimness.

Crunchy leaves on the ground, frosty mornings and nice sunny crisp days? If only... 😣

It does look good! Just wasn't best pleased because I got caught in a torrential downpour which blew past my umbrella and soaked through my trousers 😂

Some great convection today, heard some thunder earlier. I do like convective clouds, as long as there’s sunshine too. The frosty mornings and cold sunny days will happen hopefully a bit later in autumn. Really hope it’s not going to be constant grey muck

I was at my old dads house today doing a bit of painting for him. Luckily indoors.  A massive downpour around noon. Lighting and thunder. Water rushing down the street outside. Pretty chilly out there now. Winds switching round to SW by Sunday and great to see the mild air back.

If we do get a stormy setup through October and November, I'd imagine that any fallen leaves would just get blown away or end up in a wet pile.

So far, out of the 9 months, only 2 have had below average rainfall for IMBY- February & May.

    Jan- 66.2mm (8.6mm above average)

Feb- 4.2mm (36.8mm below average) The only truly dry month this year

Mar- 92.4mm (48.2mm above average) Absolute rainfest

    Apr- 65.8mm (24.8mm above average)

    May- 38.4mm (10.4mm below average)

    Jun- 56.8mm (9.5mm above average)

    Jul- 61.4mm (17.5mm above average)

    Aug- 53mm (1.4mm above average)

Sep- 56.2mm and counting (currently 8.3mm above average) Likely to be 2nd wettest despite the excellent first third

Overall- 71.1mm above average rainfall for this point in the year. IMBY, a truly wet year and on course for being the wettest since 2014. To think, some were worried about droughts earlier on in the year. I dream of drier times!

I agree. The wet and windy in the ascendancy since March.  Coinciding with the six/seven months of the year when sunny/warm weather is preferable.  It has been pretty mediocre at best or rubbish at worst. Two thirds of June (for some) and a week in September excepted.

I was quite surprised when I saw that number! The sun really did make all the difference; it probably felt 3-4 degrees warmer than that. I was walking briskly, which also had an impact -- I wouldn't have wanted to sit on a park bench in that.
