Severe thunderstoms hit the SE of England on the night of 29th September 1897.   One such storm began in Hampshire around 6pm and reached the London area around 7.30pm and Essex between 8 and 9pm. The storm gave large rainfall totals over a short time with flash flooding. The lightning was described as continuous at one stage with a bluish tint and a vivd yellow. Hail also being reported.

 

The area around Oxfordshire/Cambridgeshire and into East Anglia was severely affected by thunderstorms which broke out around 5pm 

 

The day was described as oppressive with a maximum of 70°F

Hillington: 2.12

Winslow: 1.99

Cambridge: 1.45

Oxford: 1.13

Westminster: 1.03
