Thought we could do with a competition, simply predict the highest gust in UK (including channel islands) from Ciaran and the location of said gust.

I'll start, St Helier - 111mph.

115mph - somewhere in Channel Islands, not sure if there's an official station there, or if it counts for the purposes of the competition?

If that's not allowed as non-UK or not official then I'll go 112 mph at St Helier.

Sorry I'm a dunce - St. Helier is in the Channel Islands of course, so 115mph there.

For UK only I'll go 98mph at Penzance.

I assume uk only to include channel isles?

French coast will get 117mph ( Normandy)

Channel Isles 96mph ( St hellier)

England 84mph ( Langdon bay)

You realize the metoffice closed that one citing budgetary restraints?

They may re-open it if enough people complain.

I would love to enter contest, (awkward segue) but not sure about qualifying locations? In UK only? France?

Also using mph or knots or km/hr?

Anyway, I won't be surprised if some place in nw France gusts to 105 knots, or 120 mph, or 180 km/hr. The max gust on land in UK will likely be on IOW and around 85 knots, or 95 mph or 145 km/hr although I suspect that fast-moving tornadic streaks could develop, not hitting any official recording sites but leaving evidence of locally stronger gusts. Would say east Sussex into Kent for that, if one does hit a recording station it could reach same values as I quoted for France above.

Anecdotal reports of 120 to 140 mph gusts may be posted over central to eastern Channel. S+R had better be on alert from 0300h to 0900 at least.
