@Wetterfrosch  I get that, and note that all attempts by mods to separate it into model related stuff  and hunt for cold have all failed. What was interesting were the two sub headings in the Storms thread set up by @Mcconnor8, and so ably informed by him and @Jordan S,  which helped me and many others in understand img the weather maps etc.  they were really actually useful.

snefnug Admittedly, these two plus one or two others do indeed inject some factual life blood into the thread without all the emotions that wishful thinking, speculation and IMBY remarks are brought in by others.

Coming to the end of a rather wild day, starting with two thunderstorms accompanied by hail in the morning to more persistent rain from early afternoon onwards and strong gusty winds throughout but now gradually subsiding. Lights flickered, went even out briefly, landline off since mid-afternoon but weirdly enough Internet still working but signal dodgy at times. All in all, Herminia has proved more impactful here that Eowyn. Looking forward to a drier period come midweek, giving the muddy mess that my back lawn has turned into a chance to dry out a bit. Nos da pawb!

Jordan S  why thank you Jordan.  Makes sense that.  Just never seen it before on Netweather.  Just had a look at the forecast and we have some more, and yes it is indeed foggy outside.

That'll be the day - all of Wales under >1048 hPa barometric pressure and Cornwall even touching on 1056 hPA and that's the mighty ECM for 7 February!!! But don't be too cheerful as the Daily Star already announces biblical rainfall for western Britain just four days later. We have been told that extremes will become more extreme and here we go. Will probably all have gone flat again by tomorrow but at least raises eyebrows in between!

Nice surprise to wake up this morning to see a brighter sky but didn't last too long. All grey and murky again but after a drizzly period mid-morning largely dry now and, best of all, barely a breeze which is very much welcome!

snefnug Yes, NW'lies, that's where I'm sheltered by the hillside above and why storm Darragh was rather restrained in our valley back in December. Sorry to hear you had another miserable day. While the ground is still sodden I 'amused' myself by knocking up a batch of bread but the time will come when I will no longer slide around in the mud outdoors.

So it seems a cold easterly could be on the cards for February 2025, mix of Siberian and Scandi.

Loadsa2 Very interesting reading and is actually an idea that was first floated as far back as the late 70's, if I remember rightly by Norwegian scientists. That should suit our coldies in the MOD thread, if they live long enough to see it happening, that is!😉

does anyone know where we can get monthly stats for January 2025?  In the moaning thread they are moaning about it being a rubbish month but here it seems to have been relatively bright and dry compared to previous months allbeit with a few storms thrown in.

wimblettben Late reply to your post,  snefnug was on the right track. It is actually a fogbow which in essence is formed in the same way as a rainbow but because  of the smaller size of the water droplets appears largely monochrome rather than in spectral colours. This one was recently spotted on the Brocken mountain in Germany (the same mountain top that gave the Brocken spectre it's name).

image.png.0f8b474c6fd62903e98e4404a69a3106.png

The following explanation comes courtesy of Wikipedia:

'Fogbows form in the same way as rainbows, but they are formed by much smaller cloud and fog droplets that diffract light extensively. They are almost white with faint reds on the outside and blues inside; often one or more broad supernumerary bands can be discerned inside the inner edge. The colours are dim because the bow in each colour is very broad and the colours overlap. Fogbows are commonly seen over water when air in contact with the cooler water is chilled, but they can be found anywhere if the fog is thin enough for the sun to shine through and the sun is fairly bright. They are very large—almost as big as a rainbow and much broader. They sometimes appear with a glory at the bow's centre.'

Apparently a fog bow seen in clouds, for instance looking down from an airplane is referred to as a cloud bow.

Coilspring  Yeah, I think what we're seeing is an example of "if it's not happening in the most populated parts of England, it might as well not be happening at all".

I wouldn't go as far as to call the next few days a snow event, but we're likely to see patchy yet persistent light snow over a 12-18-hour period above ~100 m with some settling above ~200 m.

In other words, not something we'll be talking about in a decade from now but nice to see nonetheless!
