We've had very light snow in Durham City today. The slightest of dustings on parts of the grass.

Anyone else looking forward to some heavy rain next weekend? It might actually get the roads washed a bit. The car is manky but it's been far too cold to wash lol

Phil Blake are we getting the high winds as well, I can cope with all weather but I despise wind, always destructive especially in the storms which I am hearing is the potential.

Gizzy it certainly looks very blustery. Thursday night into Friday looks very windy at the minute but I suppose it'll all depend on the timing of the low

The latest charts look quits severe for us in terms of wind, 65-75mph inland, could be quite damaging, hopefully it's not as bad as that and if it is, hopefully it will happen overnight

12z GFS seems pretty much in line with the Met warning with average wind speeds of around 40 mph+ for late Friday morning into the afternoon, with gusts about double that,so between 70-90 mph across the region depending on location.

Amber warnings for the whole region Friday, 70-80 looks likely with 90 in exposed areas.. could be the strongest storm here since arwen.

Nick123 A key difference is this storm will be associated with a far more typical wind direction, i.e. SW to West. Storm Arwen was abnormal with northerly windflow. In terms of tree damage it was exceptional, as trees tend to be strongest on their west side as this is the prevailing wind direction. I've never seen such tree damage from a storm as happened with Arwen..

damianslaw aye, the amount of trees that came down with arwen was phenomenal around here. The wind direction definitely was a massive factor. This will also be a severe store for us by the looks of it but hopefully the trees stand a better chance of staying upright
