Metwatch Having lived through the winter of 1963 I can confidently say that the water in your bucket would have been a solid block of ice.

Don You’re probably right. Some of the time/hoar frost this morning has already gone from the trees, although the temperature has currently gone just above freezing. A contrast to when it was around -4*C when I woke up yesterday morning. Cold spell starting to loose some strength. Has been nice still, but welcoming something milder for a bit, albeit hopefully with some further wintry weather at some point.

 Terminal Moraine

Indeed I can vouch for that.

Trying to have a game of football on a frozen pond was great fun.

The last great rime spell not much snow but also last time we had 12 air frosts in a row made -1.8c last night..

We have to go back to April 2013 for more air frosts..

Well, that's the cold spell over in Evesham.   No more frosts .....  Although atm still only +1.6c    All the rime vanished overnight.

The frost just hung on long enough to give me an ice day yesterday (maxima -0.5c) measured mdinight to midnight.

9 air frosts this month, with a run of 6 consecutive this past week.

I see that the east Midlands have hung on to the cold...

Current is +0.7C and rising very slowly after an overnight low of -0.9C.

I just missed an ice day yesterday as when the fog cleared it got to 0.2C in the sun.

I am aware that just round the corner it stayed  below freezing as it was in Elmdon Park. on my  lovely walk round.

Looks like only a slow warm up this week. Seems to be watering down with each model run now.

Rooves, lawns and garden still covered in rime frost . but it seems to have gone from the trees overnight. ,

Looks to me now like a fairly  cold dank week...

So, a very pleasant and memorable spell. Snow is obviously tops and it's great to see so many on here get proper snow...less so for us very locally, but I really loved those really cold days and the sparkling sunshine, when we had it. No complaints from me at all, we can go whole winters without anything like this (and have!), so it's been very welcome. Average temperatures and grey doesn't have the same appeal...but otoh, that's preferable to mid-teens and grey, which has happened in January's past!

I wouldn't say that this was a memorable cold spell, but it was a nice way to start the month. Obviously the big let-down was the lack of settling snow, although the freezing fog yesterday was a pretty sight. Another thing is that this seemed to be a relatively gloomy cold spell, and more sunshine would have been welcome. But there are some sunny conditions forecasted for next week even though it turns milder.

I think we are, with and without the snow, quite fortunate with the countryside, hills and overall greenery there is in the UK.

More woodlands would be nice!

Well, so much for a quick walk around the block this afternoon lol!  Slow thaw today, but still icy roads and some snow on fields.

Just got in from a diner date.  (with the wife!)

Roads turning icy now in Solihull.

The afters slight thaw has left dampness around which is now turning icy.

My current temp is -1.4c in my ice box garden so it could go quite low to match my 4C max, and leave yet another ice day..

The forecast is to reach 5c tomorrow, but if fog forms again tonight, it may struggle,

Metwatch I couldn’t disagree with that. A few more areas like Wytham Woods, Cannock Chase forest etc. Plus in terms of walking, wooded strolls add additional joy to walks and hikes.

With the ice, a few icy puddles remain here too, especially over some muddy patches and areas of field.

have to say there was nothing memorable about this called spell agree places north of the Midlands they have had a good cold still it is not unusual when you’re living at a height of 300 odd metres anything below that kind of altitude it has been crap except high heating bills hope we get another cold spell before this winter is out and I hope it’s not going to be like this one

I've noticed over the last couple of days, the milder weather is being downgraded.  For my location, the Metoffice was going for max's of 11/12C next week and minimums of 4/5C.  However, it is now (with the exception of Tuesday 10C) going for max's of 7-9C and minimums between -1 and +1C.  Nice to see mild downgraded as opposed to cold for a change!

EDIT:  actually going for a minimum of 6C tomorrow, but the rest of the week, between -1 and +1C

Supposedly a day into the thaw and I still have patches of frozen snow in my garden that fell 9 days ago. I know this spell was lacking in any really deep snow, but it's still been an impressive run of cold days. I don't remember snow lasting on the ground this long in the 10 years I've been in Telford.

That's one of the things I like about a more sustained cold spell - unless there is a dramatic rise in temperatures, it takes a while for some of the wintriness to completely disappear, reminding one of the season that we're in! It's played havoc with my outdoor running plans, but it's been worth it...
