Still completely sunless here in November.

It does seem a bit less dark this morning which is something at least.

There are some small breaks in the cloud over the Irish sea so maybe we might break our duck at some point today.

No change today in mid Essex. Not seen any sun since last Thursday and even then it was only for a time early afternoon. Before that it had been predominately cloudy. It looks as if we will have to endure this until at least Monday PM.

Sun came out for a bit yesterday. Cloud built up again by sunset though.

Still, I prefer this to never ending Atlantic storms.

Dullest spells in records. Impressive now that current one is the dullest so far this century and since 1987. No November dull spell has come as close as the current one either apart from November 1897.

I think also the December 1964 record could be an error with the sunshine recorder not working. There was no such long dull period in Elmdon or Wellesbourne and looking through reanalysis charts, some of the days in the second half of that month shows a clear, bright, cool airmass.

Remember that we were in the days of smoke/fog back then..

I had been thinking about this sort of period... from a point of view as to what happened afterwards. My memories are a bit hazy as these times do not stand out when looking back, but I was fairly certain that we did have such periods in my lifetime  (80 years!), when I was a kid as I remember days of fog and days of low cloud as well.

I do seem to recollect that quite a  number preceded a cold spell..

Now I guess  I understand why... its to do whether we got retrogression or not.

Fingers crossed for this one.

I can also remember days of easterly clag, when Siberian cold was forecast, I was quite upset when that happened !!.

At just before 9 this morning the sky brightened and the sun almost shone, Ten minutes later, however, thicker cloud arrived and we were back to square one. It is now 10.30 and is slightly brighter, but no real signs of the sun breaking through.

I dread to think what it would be like as of today in London and other large cities if the regulations had not been brought in to reduce the impact of smog.

Wow the sun has got his hat on and he's come out today. Not clear blue skies but peeping through high level thin clouds, although occasionally hiding behind thicker ones. At least we know the sun is still up there!

Jamie M Yeah, noticed. I give up on the sunshine tables now anyway. No point doing them if these stations are gonna be incompetent & not correct their errors. If anyone wants to take over from me, please do so. I'm done.

Must be problem with data processing from other sources as the raw Met O. stuff is ok on OGIMET:

Thought it'd be interesting now to check the dullest first half of Novembers on record for here in Coventry, these are the top 5 apparantly:

1912: 10.2 hrs

1941: 11.3 hrs

1901: 11.6 hs

1902: 12.4 hrs

1942: 21.2 hrs

3.1 hours up to today for the whole month, well on our way for 2024 to make it on this list.

Doubt that it will be on that list come Nov 30th

That list is for the first halves to Novembers only not the whole month.

Good news is that the Manston sunshine duration has returned to their routine observations as from 1400 yesterday:

AAXX 14124

03797 05575 10113 10118 20071 30250 40311 50003 69941 81/// 333 4/013 55310 21233 60005 81/23 91018 90710 91119==

In todays midday report it is the group 55310, where 553 is a group indicator and 1.0 is a full hours sunshine.

The less helpful news is that the group 4/013 shows a snow depth of 13cm!

The cloudy trend is continuing here in Mid Essex. We had some brightness for a while on Tuesday, yesterday started brightish but clouded over just after 10am and remained cloudy for the rest of daylight hours. Today has remained cloudy inspite of a promise of it being brighter. I doubt we will catch up on the deficit thus far in the remaining days of the month. It is even more difficult as the hours of daylight continue to reduce each day.
