December 2024 finished on 25.4 hours here, dullest since 1989 and that is 46% of average.

2024 had 1376.4 hours of sunshine, the dullest year 1993.

Heathrow only just cracked the 1500 hour mark this year. Since 1990, only 1992, 1993 and 2021 were duller.

December once again struggling into the low 20s. The dullest Decembers on record at Heathrow are 1969, 2010, 2024, 2023 and 2021 in that order.

By far the dullest year since I began continuous sunshine records in 2000. Just 796.8 hrs of sunshine, 245 hrs less than the previous lowest in 2014. December was the second dullest on record with 17.7 hrs, 0.4 hrs more than in 2021.

Part 1 of the sunshine statistics for both December 2024 and the year as a whole.

Most places finished far below average except for the Shetland islands, the Scottish Highlands, eastern Scotland and Lowestoft on the east coast somehow avoiding much of the grey muck through the year.

Eastbourne absolutely shocking. To finish in the 1400s is embarrassing when their average is over 1900 hours!

The 2nd part (England counties) will be posted once the last 6 stations bother to update.

SunSean Thanks bud, excellent work again, irrespective of the dire stats for many

Interesting trend developing ( I hope not though )
For my spot "Valley"

2022 - 1706.4 hrs
2023 - 1591.3 hrs

MetOffice charts:

Unsurprisingly terrible almost everywhere except parts of northern Scotland and the Northern Isles. Some areas in the east and south coast just scraped over 1650 hours which is still very poor.

Here, we finished on 1455 hours or 91% of average, making it the dullest year since 1998. A dreadful year for sunshine.

No, Shawbury didn't catch sun-drenched Lerwick after all.

1045 hours is beyond abysmal, even for cloud-prone Shropshire. Add 970mm of rain as well (average is 682). 2024 is just in a league of its own for persistent dull, wet rubbish.

Summer of 95 looks like it had about 1200 hours?

reef 1045 tallies with what's on the Met Office data pages (it actually comes out at 1043.8).

Those maps give a good general idea I find, but don't always nail it down to a very local level or place the colours completely accurately (eg the <1200 area should extend into Herefordshire by the looks of it, it doesn't seem to go as far east as Sheffield when it should, and there is way too much orange in the southwest going by the Camborne and Yeovilton figures).

Summer of 95 Yes, those are station data pages are uncorrected. Shawbury switched to a Kipp & Zonen sunshine recorder in October 2001 (you can see this in the data where there is a hash next to the figure), so values are not comparable previous to then.

The panel maps use corrected data to compensate for this, so are more accurate. The figures you see are generally 10-12% lower than they should be compared to readings from the old Campbell Stokes recorders.

Why the MetOffice do not give these corrected figures in the station data pages I'll never know.

reefLooks like my corrected figure of 1502 hours is spot on. Heathrow is right on the 1500 hour boundary on that map.

Annual sunshine at Heathrow for the last 10 years.

2024: 1502.2 hours

2023: 1671.4 hours

2022: 1845.2 hours

2021: 1369.6 hours !!!

2020: 1763.6 hours

2019: 1702.7 hours

2018: 1862.7 hours

2017: 1604.7 hours

2016: 1624.9 hours

2015: 1660.9 hours

B87 About an 11% correction, slap bang in the range.

That 2021 figure always astounds me. We had 1612 hours here that year.

Summer 2021 in Heathrow was what Summer 2020 was here (Just 411 hours!).

reef It ranges from 6% in December to 14% in June.

2021 was the dullest year on record.

2024 total sunshine 🌞

A table for total sunshine hours and the other for percentage of average sunshine.

It seems, percentage of average wise, some Eastern places did near normal and North Eastern areas did OK comparing to normal while at the other end, South Coastal regions did pathetic comparing to normal along with poor showings from the North West and South West.

Overall, a horrific year for sunshine for most places and one that we will not want to see repeated for a very long time.
