In terms of sunshine this summer here from the Met Office Bablake station:

June: 207 hours (average = 184.7)

July: 181 hours (average = 197.6)

August so far: 32 hours (likely over 40 after today) (month average = 179.6)

Total for summer 2024 so far: 420 hours

1991-20 summer average: 561.9 hours

Record sunniest summer: 1989 - 762.1 hours

Record dullest summer: not sure exactly but likely 1912, somewhere between 350 - 375 hours an estimate (Midlands figure was 353.9 hours for 1912)

Not doing too badly here, but August does have some catching up to do!

@SunSean  impressive month for Shoey thus far .. 70.9 hrs to the 9th ,  a country mile ahead of the chasing pack mate .. to be on average up to and including the 9th , 63.6hrs would be the target , currently on 112%  🌞

50.4 hrs here up to the 12th, that's 87% of average for the first 12 days in August.

Still below average but a lot better than July and helped considerably by 12.0 hrs on the 11th, the second sunniest day of the year so far.

August 1st-20th sunshine 🌞 ☀️

Massive disparity between South & East to North & West! Some locations, including mine, have had a very decent August so far while for others, it may have been pants so far!

77.1 hrs here up to the 24th , 76% of average for this stage of the month.  It won't be the dullest August on record ( 81.6 hrs in 2008 ) but it'll  be in the bottom 10.

I see inland Cumbria bottom of the pack in July and third from bottom last Aug update, given the last 5 days have delivered barely any sunshine here, we will probably end up bottom of the pack for August as well.

Since posting the above earlier this month, up to yesterday there's been 157.2 hours this August. An extra 4-5 hours to be added today from this morning as it's now clouded over so unlikely to record anymore. Estimate for overall total August is 162 hours, about 18 hours below average.

Summer 2024 total: 551 hours. Compared to 1991-20 average of 561.9 hours, it could be much worse!

Shows the SE/NW split very well. My location was well and truely the wrong side of the divide!

It's frustating that the official Greater Manchester site is Rostherne.  It is rural, therefore at-typical of the wider area.  Also it is on the most extreme SW extremity of Greater Manchester, a very poor location to represent the area.  Rochdale/Oldham to the NE of the city would be very different, and equally poor as a representation of the whole area, but would be more similar to my location.

Rock bottom, what a surprise. Every bit of cloud found Shropshire in August, especially on countless days that were forecast to be sunny. SE-NW splits are the pits, there was also the infill issue (this area often seems to suffer particularly badly from it).

Noting for the year to date, only Shap (1,000ft+ elevation) is behind Shawbury. This year has been atrocious for sunshine, over 600 hours are now needed in the last 4 months to make average. And Shawbury isn't the dullest place in Shropshire:

Preston Montford UK climate averages

Preston Montford (same elevation as Shawbury, about 3 miles NW of Shrewsbury) is over 100 hours duller on average. I live almost exactly halfway between them, slightly higher up (96m). It very often does seem to look clearer over towards Shawbury, including this summer.

97.6 hrs here in August which is 75% of the 30 year average and makes it the 7th consecutive duller than average month. It was the dullest August since 2021 which had 84.3 hrs.

323.7 hrs for the summer as a whole, 76% of average and the dullest summer since 2012 which recorded 284.3 hrs.

September 1st-10th sunshine... (cloudshine) 🌧☁️🌧

Laughably bad for most. Complete flip from Summer with most of the South East floating around the bottom & some rare sights in the top section. South West continue to do horrific.

17.5 hrs here in the first 10 days, that's 49% of normal for the period. Yet another very dull start to a month.

SunSean I would think most of the low end will be looking at trebling (at least) their numbers next week , if the operationals are in good form,  currently day 2 into cross model agreement, there or thereabouts,  with a decent HP block (resident or just to our north east) 🌞, coupled with a lift back into "decent" September temps
