Scottish weather discussion - Winter 24/25.

A welcome change in the weather. I saw on Saturday the BBC were saying numerous stations (including one of my nearest here, Dundrennan) had recorded zero minutes of sunshine this month.

Thankfully Sunday broke that statistic in the late afternoon and yesterday was lovely. We went down to the beach at Sandyhills and it was empty which was great.

I see cold(er) weather is forecast for next week, I look forward to the photos in here of hopefully some early snow. Next opportunity I get i’ll be up some munros now that it’s no longer mild nonsense.

-0.1C at 8am, so sixth air frost here this morning. Close call! Weak sunshine now...

As for the start of next week - here's my reference to the current GFS trend:

Mist/fog struggling to shift so a tad chilly but sun was out for a bit

Sunny after min of 1C.  Pressure high at over 1040mb.

Surprisingly good air quality generally, including down in England.  (less than 50ppm is low or very low particulates)

6.9c (got my new weather station set-up!) with fog moving in, looks pretty foggy all the way down into Ayrshire from here. 

Suspect next week will mostly likely be dry here unless we get the edge of a front or trough or the wind moves round more to the north-west, looking forward to some fog and frost though!

Oh go on, I'll be the one to risk jinxing it.... 

Obviously comes with a large dose of caution at that range, and we've all seen flips in the past, but the trend is interesting and consistent.

Garden nearly ready for winter.  A store of neeps up today ground conditions perfect, preparing to take cows and calves in if the real cold arrives. Will turn  off outside water troughs this coming weekend.

Planning Outlook

All mountain areas of Britain from Thursday, 14 November, 2024

High pressure lasting until Friday, ending with a cold front coming from the northwest, what marks the end of fairly dry and mild period. On Saturday, the front will pass over Britain, reaching central England by the end of the day. bringing some rain to most hilly areas. Drastic cooling and big pressure drop behind the front. On Sunday and start of next week, in low pressure, frequent showers are expected, with snow on the hills, snowflakes even down to valleys and towns. In the Highlands snow may reach significant depths rapidly, meaning truly winter conditions fairly early in the season.

Slight frost first thing followed by a bright morning. The fog came down after 2pm and hasn’t lifted since.

Another glorious day yesterday with clear air with great visibility.  Looks more wintery next week. Looking back the last measurable snow here was 8th February which is over 9 months, comfortably the longest stretch since we moved up here 2016.

Glorious out there, temperature of 14c and car thermometer read 15c regularly around the Alford/Aboyne area around lunchtime.

Calm conditions and some good spells of sunshine, even saw a cabbage white butterfly on the go - won't be this time next week!

 Snowandrocks I jinxed it last time - about 2 months ago - by putting mine on. Wasting good Nordic rubber on warm roads <sigh>

Very nice, sunny 11C/92%/1032mb after min just above freezing.

For anticyclonic spell a week long, surprising that air quality has been mostly very good!
